City Honors School has been ranked the 35th best school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. That's a 15-spot increase from last year, when City Honors ranked 50th. The placement was based on both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests.
“I’m proud of the hard working faculty and students of City Honors School for earning this national recognition for academics. We have added academic rigor to classrooms all across the Buffalo Public School District, including expansion of the I.B. Program at City Honors School. This is a highly respected honor the entire City of Buffalo can be proud of,” said Buffalo Schools Superintendent Dr. James A. Williams.
Leonardo da Vinci High School was named a Bronze Medal winner for academic excellence, and it should be noted that their disadvantaged student rat…

Earlier this morning, the downtown business crowd was greeted to the fresh smell of coffee wafting from the front door of the historic Buehl building. We stopped into The 2nd Cup cafe later in the afternoon to check out the offerings and we're blown away by the interior space. I guess I never realized that the cafe was going to be fully utilizing all 4000 sq.' of space. The 2nd Cup is divided into two distinct areas - one for ordering and grabbing items to go, and a second room where customers can grab a table to relax.
We've been passing by the Buehl almost everyday in anticipation of finding the doors open (see back story). Today was our lucky day, and although we had already eaten a short time earlier, just getting to walk around the incredible transformation was all we could have asked for. The c…

Thon Thon Mathiang is a refugee from Sudan. He immigrated to the City of Buffalo on July 5th 2005 to escape the civil war engulfing his country where his mother was killed. He explained to me his travels from Sudan in order to survive and his arrival in Egypt where he applied to the UN as a refugee as he put it; “for resettlement to the great country of United States of America so my life will change from worse to excellent.”
Thon Thon strives for one thing, “I want to reach the top of my education”. He is currently a student at E.O.C. taking advance classes and placement tests to get into E.C.C. and complete his dream to be an artist. “God gave me a great talent drawing, and I will study to make it a career.”
The road for Thon Thon pursuing his dream and career has been difficult at best. He left his country mourning his mother and arrived in America with the same …

Can't drink? Who says so? One of Buffalo’s most historic taverns will be the setting for a spirited commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition. Join Forgotten Buffalo, for ceremonial toast at Pristach’s Tavern located on Buffalo's East Side tonight.
One of four stops, Pristach’s is first on the list of Forgotten Buffalo’s tour of family owned taverns for this heady celebration. December 5th,1933 is when the United States repealed the Eighteenth Amendment and once again allowed Americans - and Buffalonians - the legal right to consume alcoholic beverages, ending almost 14 years of prohibition.
50 history enthusiasts will gather, as well as Prohibition historian and filmmaker Stephan Powell, who will provide insight about Buffalo during the “dry” years. (Imagine!) Powell will share colorful stories about bootlegging & smuggling across th…

Thursday marked the next step in The Michigan Street African American Heritage Project. A Commission has been put together and held its first meeting to talk about creating the management plan required to become the 20th Heritage Area in New York State.
The august commission will begin by solidifying their vision for the area which will commemorate the African American experience in Buffalo through the Underground Railroad, the Civil Rights Movement, and the rich culture the Colored Musician’s Club brought in shaping that experience. The targeted East Side area is a swath that lies roughly between Broadway, Eagle, Elm and Nash, to William Street and encompasses the Colored Musician’s Club, the Michigan Street Baptist Church and the new Edward Nash House Museum which includes 50 years of Pastor Nash's letters, sermons and a collection of local memorabilia.
The meeting open…

It’s really a shame if you missed the reading series “Poetry at the Tea House” that took place at Tru-Teas! during this past year. Luckily, Trudy Stern didn’t want anyone to miss out and teamed up with Michael Morgulis to produce an incredibly fine, unbound book entitled “Tea Leaves” to commemorate the readings and spread the work of the local poets who partook in the program.
In honor of the publication of this special edition portfolio, Morgulis and Stern are hosting a Publication Party to celebrate. Each of the portfolios contain a title and statement page and 11 broadside pages of poems by 11 of Buffalo’s local poets. The portfolio is hard bound and the cover is silk-screened with an image created just for the cover. Each page is illustrated by Morgulis and printed and produced at New Buffalo Graphics Studio.
Come on out to 1417 Hertel Avenue at 4 PM to see t…

I think that I would like to start off this post by commending the three Common Council members who were bold enough to ask for today's bizarre Waterfront Village decision to be tabled. David Franczyk, Mickey Kearns and Mike LoCurto all stuck to their guns when it came to holding off on making any hasty (and potentially tragic) decisions regarding our waterfront. Unfortunately, their headstrong stance was outweighed by the rest of the BURA committee, and the rumors are flying as to why a craptastic design would even be considered for our architecturally significant city.
During the meeting I had the opportunity to see, for the first time, not only the Specialty Restaurants plan (presented by "developer" James Pitts) that would deface our waterfront, but also the Ciminelli boutique hotel proposal (pictur…
