Doug Bauer, a regular diner at Betty's, is now showcasing his artwork throughout the establishment. This is only a small sampling of what the architect-turned-artist has produced over the years, but he rarely publicly exhibits--this is an opportunity to stand in awe of his constructions.
Doug Bauer's background as an architect caused him to step away from the flat surface of a canvas and extend outward into manifested “structural collages” that may include materials such as Plexiglas, wood veneer, mirror, museum board, acrylics, spray enamel and various glues. “Kurt Schwitters and the Bauhaus movement, as well as many of the Constructivists of that period, have influenced me. These works have to be examined carefully since they consist of works within works, including miniature paintings, moving parts, mirrors, and other details. The works contain grids that are working against each other, conveying both motion and dynamic balance,” said Bauer.
Kathleen Sherin, a curator at NCCC, coordinates what goes on the walls at Betty's at any given time. As Betty's show programmer, Sherin invited Bauer to hang his pieces as soon as she received the slides he had submitted to Betty's owners. “I made a visit to Doug's house and studio on Johnson Parkway and was blown away by his work. His apartment was filled and overflowing with even bigger and more elaborate pieces (some with moving parts and lights!), than are on view at Betty's. He's a very humble guy, but what is impressive is his dedication to this creative endeavor and sustained artistic vision,” says Sherin.
Betty's is a destination where the food and the art are equally delectable. The three dimensional structures are currently on display until October 14.
