Bashar Issa Will (Not) Speak
UPDATE: Bashar has officially missed his plane and will not be speaking. The speaking engagement will hopefully be rescheduled.
Have you been wondering what is happening on the Statler Hotel project? Well, get the story straight from the man himself. Bashar Issa will speak tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Statler Hotel. He will address the 2008 Buffalo Tours docent training class. Mr. Issa will talk about what work has been completed, historic tax credits, and why Buffalonians should be passionate about their city.
Mr. Issa’s talk will be followed at 11:30 by a one-hour tour of City Hall. David Granville will be our host and guide.
Come downtown Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for a most stimulating morning. Admission for this event is $10.
This event is sponsored by Buffalo Tours, a collaborative program of the Preservation Coalition of Erie County and the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier.
The Buffalo Tours 2008 tour season begins Saturday, May 3 with Downtown Revealed. You don’t know downtown if you don’t know the landmarks by master architects Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, Richard Upjohn, and E.B. Green. Join us at 9:30 a.m. at the Market Arcade for this informative look at the architecture and history of downtown Buffalo. The cost is $10.

My Favorite Buildings
This house on Richmond Avenue is very unusual for Buffalo. It stands out among its wooden neighbors not only in material but also in detail and form. Buffalo is overwhelmingly constructed of wood with brick coming in a distant second as a material. Stone houses are very rare. Also rare is the Palazzo styling and shape of this house. The Wait is Almost Over - BR's New Site
As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.

And he "missed his plane" about 24 hours before BR posted the announcement he would be speaking. What's up with that??? He was supposed to be in Buff Thurs evening for meetings....so if you calculate the time it takes to fly from UK to Bflo....BR was way wrong to start....and made it worse with the "missed the plane" excuse. Or maybe the dog ate his plane ticket.....and the cash he was going to use to renovate the Statler.

Issa is a moron, has never completed any of his projects; that is one of the reasons why he could never lock up financing.

Or some Buffalonians are idiots and unreasonably pessimistic. For one who has actually physically been at his projects in Manchester there is no reason to believe that projects will no be completed. Projects of this magnitude take a while to complete even in England where funding options and land use laws are more easily transversed. Patience is a virtue and time will tell with this project. Progress has been made.( the new marble in the lobby is beautiful ) Sorry it's taking a little longer than expected to correct generations of mistakes.

SALA, I have to agree with you to a point.
I wouldn’t go so far as calling people “idiots”, but I agree about the pessimism. The unfortunate truth of this is that the people of Buffalo have earned their degree in the fine arts of pessimism through a life time of attendance at the school of hard knocks. Time and again we have been failed by the politicians, homegrown snake oil salesmen, and the out of town ne’er do wells that came falsely under the flag of hope for our beleaguered city, only to rape the public coffers when push came to shove. I sincerely do not believe Mr. Issa is defined by his vile predecessors and I sincerely believe he possesses a love and hope for the city and the projects he wants to complete here.
I think the personal attacks on him have been unfair; however, I completely understand the frustration those that make them are feeling. It’s a simple and desperate act to attack when things have hit a rough patch, or, God forbid, fail, just as it is easy to place inflated and unfair expectations on a “white knight” carrying a gun full of silver bullets. What SALA said above is quite true; Mr. Issa is working in an environment of generations deep hostility to undue the myriad of mistakes made by those that have come before.
Rome was not built in a day, just as the rebirth of the Statler and our fair city will take a fair measure of years.
Mr. Issa’s only misstep, thus far, has been his optimism magnified by his “cowboy/playboy” machismo – I only hope his enthusiasm is built on a foundation of extreme fortitude and patience. He is no more the savior many wish him to be than he is the inexperienced failure so many want him to be.
If he has the chops to last, I believe these projects will come to be and in those endeavors I only wish him the best.
