Beer in the City: Oktoberfest
Buffalo, it’s time to break out the lederhosen! On Saturday, September 22, the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation is holding “Picnic on the Plaza V: Oktoberfest.” If you missed Brewfest, this is your chance to make up for it (and if you were there, I know you’re already planning on hitting up Oktoberfest!).
Although it’ll be a few million visitors smaller than the celebrations in Munich, early indications are that this will be quite a fun crowd. In addition to authentic German food and imported German beers, musical entertainment will be provided by The Frankfurters. Tickets are $10 and include a drink ticket--much more reasonable than airfare to Germany.
What’s that you say? You want to go, but really can’t afford to drop ten bucks this weekend? Well, if that’s the case, get creative and make yourself an authentic-looking costume, and you will gain entry to this fine event free of charge (of course, you should go in costume even if you have the money--you know how flattering those knee socks are). By the way, Oktoberfest as we know it began in 1810, so Slavic Barbarian costumes don’t count, unfortunately. If it was up to me, anyone dressed as Conan would get in for free.
How about a contest, in true YUM! fashion: if you can identify me at the event, I’ll dance a polka with you (as long as Bill Belichick isn’t there videotaping it to steal my slick moves). I do have some experience, as a former Polish dancing student at Eugenia’s Dance Studio (Oh, how the fates tried to destroy me during puberty).

Sea Bar-City
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. Dinosaur Stalks Buffalo!!
Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Too bad the organizers didn't plan very well. The terminal was filled with wonderful music, delicious food and beer--What more could you ask for? When the crowd began to arrive and had dinner in one hand and a beer in the other they made their way to a spot at a sea of tables festively decorated with blue and white tablecloths. Unfortunately there were no chairs! Ten minutes into the celebration and all the chairs were taken--It wasn’t surprising because there appeared to be only 2-3 to an 8 foot table. A man nearby went our to his car to fetch a lawn chair from his truck for his father, a group of men returned from the restaurant area triumphantly setting down a wooden bench to provide another 4 seats, but many gave up and simply left for the evening.
