Buffalo Tours 2008 Season Begins
Buffalo Tours shines a spotlight on the area’s architecture and history again this year. The 2008 Season kicks off on Saturday, May 3rd with the “Downtown Revealed” tour at 9:30 a.m. at the Market Arcade (617 Main Street). Explore some of the classic architecture that downtown has to offer including the Guaranty Building, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and City Hall.
The tours continue on Sunday, May 4 with “Walking the Pan-Am” tour at 12:30 p.m. This tour meets at the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society (BECHS), 25 Nottingham Court at Elmwood Avenue and is offered in collaboration with BECHS. Imagine those months in 1901, when the world marveled at the electric lights, fountains, daily band performances, and the Spanish Colonial architecture of the exposition grounds.
Why was the Columbus Park-Prospect Hill neighborhood named this year to the NY Preservation League’s annual “Seven to Save” list of most threatened historic places? Because large portions of this neighborhood are slated for demolition to make way for the “preferred” new Peace Bridge plaza plan. Join the “In the Shadow of the Peace Bridge” tour on Sunday, May 4, and learn firsthand about this irreplaceable urban fabric we might be about to lose, as well as community efforts to save it. This tour meets at 1 p.m. at the corner of Columbus Parkway (Seventh Street) and Columbus Park West (Connecticut Street).
All tours cost $10.
Now in its third year, Buffalo Tours is a collaborative program of the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier and the Preservation Coalition of Erie County, two non-profit volunteer organizations. Thanks to the generosity of M&T Bank and the support of The Buffalo News, more than 100,000 tour brochures will be distributed throughout the region and the nation this season. This oversized, full color brochure describes the 30 unique Guided Tours that will be offered this season and provides a calendar listing of when each will take place, and also lists all 50 Self-Guided Audio Tours and the extension to access each.

This house on Richmond Avenue is very unusual for Buffalo. It stands out among its wooden neighbors not only in material but also in detail and form. Buffalo is overwhelmingly constructed of wood with brick coming in a distant second as a material. Stone houses are very rare. Also rare is the Palazzo styling and shape of this house. The Wait is Almost Over - BR's New Site
As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.

With a fresh batch of great new tours - as well as the return of old favorites - and a stellar crop of new docents who have studied hard, sacrificed their Saturday mornings, and risked hypothermia this winter learning their way around Buffalo's first rate architecture, there is lno doubt that this year's tour season is shaping up to be the best ever - well worth checking out!
Here's some "insider" information about Sunday's tour of the Prospect Park neighborhood: at the public meeting Thursday about the Peace Bridge expansion, Kathy Mecca of the neighborhood strongly "hinted" that there will be a special treat in store for all those who attend. While I'm sworn to secrecy, I can say that you do *not* want to miss this great tour of a neighborhood of good neighbors, rich heritage, fine architecture, and unmatched sights and views.
Come on out and experience Buffalo's cultural heritage, up close and personal.

Will nonono be guiding the tours of Allentown? I hear he gives an outstanding "interpretive history" of that neighborhood's many fine community oirganizations.

I tried to log into it with my gmail id and password but it still tells me no access. is there a way to see whats to come another way?..thanks.

If you go to the bottom of the page you can subscribe to a news feed to get email notifications of updates. I really enjoyed all the tours last summer, the Pan Am Walking tour was a real treat.
