Buffalo's Dyngus Day Darlings: Those Idiots
I know what you’re thinking. How can I take a band called “Those Idiots” seriously and polka is the last thing I want to listen to. First of all, you shouldn’t take them seriously. These goof balls are a riotously good time playing fun, light-hearted songs and the energy of their performances is infectious. According to the Idiots’ lead singer, Myron Deputat, “Polka music is all about living life to its fullest.”
Secondly, this is not your Grandfather’s polka (no offense Dja Dja). Those Idiots are known for their Polka covers; most famously “The Sedated Polka” a polka version of the Ramones “I Want To Be Sedated.”
Despite what the band name implies, the members of Those Idiots are both intelligent and talented. Between the 10 members they have over 20 degrees. And you may recognize these cats from other bands like: John and Mary and the Valkyries, The Nickel City Pimp Choir, Push Button Theory, Myron and Id, Thirsty Blues Band, Revival, The Feast, and BarKing Spiders.
The Idiots started as a rock and roll band playing original music and covers. Roughly 6 years ago they were booked to play Buffalo’s Dyngus Day celebration at Adam Mickiewicz Library. While setting up they realized the crowd was mostly senior citizens so Deputat quickly ran out, made photo copies of Ukrainian polkas he had and distributed them to the rest of the band. They performed these polkas well to everyone’s delight and also had fun doing it.
Those Idiots are considered by some to be a central/pivotal factor in the revival of Buffalo's Dyngus Day. These young men play high energy, fun music that relates to a younger crowd. Head Idiot Deputat recalls approximately 200-300 people at that first fateful Dyngus celebration; last year's Dyngus Day crammed nearly [700-1000] people into the Adam Mickiewicz Library. Expect this year to be just as crowded with a line out the door.
If raucously partying isn’t your thing, well I don’t know why you’re reading this, then attending the Idiots’ performance earlier in the evening at the Central Terminal is the way to go. There’s certainly more room to dance. Personally, I’ll be hitting both Idiots’ performances because I just can't get enough.
The crowd pleasing Idiots are giving their fans what they want this year with at least 6 new polka-fied pop songs. I won’t give it away but let’s just say one is Hawaiian themed, a couple hearken back to classic rock, and there’s even a popular dance tune circa 1989. Those Idiots are like nothing you’ve ever experienced. Do yourself a favor and catch one of their performances on Monday.

In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.

Courtney, we were blown away by "Those Idiots" last year at the terminal. "I Want to be Sedated" is a complete surprise and very funny. Very enjoyable band to listen to!

Courtney, with all due respect, what is a non Polka fan (i.e., you) doing writing a story about a Polka band? That's like me writing a review on RAP, to me it's all crap, although I respect those that like it and for that reason would not consider writing a review on it.

dBm - I'm not sure where the misunderstanding stems from but I do indeed enjoy polka music and polka dancing. I am sincere when I say Those Idiots are one of my favorite bands.

Courtney, your comment in the first sentence of your article states "and polka is the last thing I want to listen to". A comment like that sort of tells me you're not a Polka fan, no?

jhill - Thank you for the inquiry, I should have included the title of the song in the caption initially. It is called "Ty Zhe Mene."

You might want to note that the sentence that proceeds the statement you are quoting is "I know what you're thinking", a reference to the author's perception that most of her readers are not polka fans, not that she is not a polka fan. I can attest to her appreciation of polka music as I sit next to Courtney at the Buffalo Rising office. She plays polka tunes on her head phones all day long.

Those Idiots rocked Dyngus Day 2008. Some of their polka-fied cover songs include; AC/DC For Those About to Polka, KISS Medley Polka, Johnny Cash Walk The Line Polka, Goo Goo Dolls Iris, Outkast Hey Ya! and Mele Kalikimaka Polka Hawaii's way to say Merry Dyngus to you. If you missed it, catch them this Friday (March 28).
