Built by Betty

Bettyâs, one of downtownâs favorite lunch and dinner spots, is gearing up for a small expansion. Carroll Simon, co-owner of the establishment, informed me today that she was retiring from her job at the Science Museum to dedicate herself more to the business. âIâve been wanting to do this for a little while,â she said. âWeâre going to do three things⊠first we want to expand the kitchen capacity to handle a higher volume of take-outs. Then, we want to incorporate the addition that will double as a community meeting-place. And we want to build a bar that will be for grab-n-go breakfasts in the morning and wine and beer in the evening.
âWe want it to be the type of place where âthinkersâ can come to discuss ideas. It will be a place where people can share ideas⊠I want to model it after The White Dog CafĂ© in Philadelphia. That cafĂ© was founded by Judy Wicks, co-chair of Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). The new addition will be a space where ideas percolate⊠a marrying of a for-profit business with non-profit ideals. The new bar will be located directly behind where the couch is located (front entrance). Thereâs a 700 sq.â room back there that will be perfect for what we want to do⊠it wonât be a late night bar⊠more like a breakfast bar with juice drinks and scones⊠and a venue to hang out after work.â

As we mentioned in our previous post, weâre in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. Weâre almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our usersâ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

Great idea.
The White Dog is a great spot and anyone who is in Philly should check it out.
Of course, it helps that it is right in the middle of an area that is home to several universities as well as the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Right On Betty's killer healthy food at a great price and casual atmosphere. What a combination for a chill spot to sip some coldies post-work in the early evening!

Just wanted to make a quick point, Betty's is not in Downtown, it is on the Lower West Side. Here is the map that shows this: http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/asl/maps/buf/buffalo_neighborhoods.html
I know that this sounds picky, but I wish that the local media would make these distinctions more often. How many times are you watching the 6:00 news and they report that someone was shot in "Downtown Buffalo" when really it was on the East Side, or the West Side or where ever. I hate that people think that all of the crime all happens downtown and that the whole city is downtown. Really most of the crime happens East of Main Street and West of Richmond.

thank you 11111inBflo!! I am glad I am not the only person that is fighting this fight. I agree with you 100%. While that cited map is pretty out of date and to a point almost factually incorrect in its descriptions at this point. I have tried to email them new images and descriptions but they don't seem to want to update it. In the end the view that all of Buffalo is downtown is because most people don't live in Buffalo anymore. Or from the constant influx of students to UB that think South Campus is downtown... yeah I know, talk about irritating. The problem with this idea is that when EVERYTHING gets lumped together only the negatives stand out. Crimes in "Buffalo" empty lots in "Buffalo" well when you hear this on the news by employees who almost exclusively live outside of the city in homes in the burbs you don't think there is anything of worth in "Buffalo" Elmwood, Hertel, University Heights, West Village, Riverside, Black Rock, Kaisertown... and it inhibits people's will to venture into any part of the city since its all the same.
This is changing slowly.. but for most of my life colleges my age we told "Buffalo" was bad and dangerous and the facts are not everyplace is the same. Yes off topic but Newell we really should try to be a tad more delicate. I know you know this isn't really downtown but when I have a friend calling me from pearl and court asking how to walk to Betty's I don't want them to think you steered them wrong. And unfortunately those sort of confusions happen ALL the time.

I agree entirely that we should use the right names for our neighborhoods/areas. Betty's is in Allentown.

I walked past Betty's yesterday and could see that there does appear to be a large and apparently unused area behind the entrance/reception room. I'm curious as what it is currently being used for: storage, perhaps ?
