Chillin' Out with Hanna's Frosty Treats

Hanna's Frosty Treats has been serving smiles on the corner of Taunton and Colvin for as long as I can remember. In my conversation with owner Maureen Karvouniaris, I learned that it's been there, scooping up summertime sweets for its devoted North Buffalo neighborhood, for over 35 years.
Perry's Ice Cream is available, along with soft serve, ices, floats, shakes and “Screamers”--the name for the popular combination of soft serve and bits of candy bar or cookie. The Grasshopper Sundae is a favorite, made of vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate chip mint cookie crumbles, sweet crème de menthe sauce, whipped cream and a green cherry. Other signature treats include the Turtle Sundae made with vanilla ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce, nuts, whipped cream and a cherry, and the S'more Sundae which, comprised of ice cream, graham cracker crumbs, chocolate sauce and marshmallow topping, matches the flavor of the fireside treat we all know and love.

Prices are reasonable and portions are more than generous. Like many of WNY's seasonal businesses, Hanna's opens for business in early April and closes when the weather turns cold in October. Family owned and operated, it is certainly one of the longest standing ice cream spots in Buffalo. There is plenty of parking and it's especially nice for those with children as there are picnic tables at which to sit and enjoy your purchase. On warm days (and even some pretty chilly ones) there is quite a crowd gathered outside enjoying the weather and Hanna's Frosty Treats. Check it out.

A corner joint needn't be a dive.
And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jake’s Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
“We don’t take shortcuts here at Papa Jake’s,” Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jake’s fresh and tasty menu. “I don’t want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …

LOVE HANNAH's! And, it's quite a trip there from Downtown. I grew up in this 'hood and there has always been an ice cream spot there. Going to Hannah's every summer brings back rich memories of the good days gone by.

I have lived around the corner from Hannah's my whole life. I get sad when the boards go up for the Winter and happy when the boards come down! Did the article even mention LEMON ICE...?

Trivia information, the Taylor Air Cooled Soft Serve Machine In this place, if it's still in use, came from Boulder Colorado. The sale of that machine launched "The So Have A Sandwich " Deli on Elmwood and North.
