Downtown Skaters Make Do

Downtown Skaters Make Do

Story Options

While visiting the future site of Festival Park I ran into three skaters who were pulling some rail slides on an old building foundation. The makeshift cement blocks had been pieced together and a smooth surface topped it off. Actually, for an abandoned industrial site, these guys had pulled the ‘park’ together nicely. The surface of the foundation was surprisingly smooth. "We cleaned it up the best we could," Jim (photo) said. "A bunch of skaters helped out and we've been skating here all summer."

Jim and his buddies, Alex and Brian, even had a small lean-to erected to offer some shade from the sweltering summer sun. Plywood ramps were scattered about and the surface cracks had been filled in. The land, located at the corner of Miami and Moore, might be a cool temporary location, but come October the vacant property will go up on the auction block. Then, who knows what will become of the 'park'. And if you don't think that this property will move, just wait until tomorrow when we'll be showing off plans for an exciting parcel of land nearby.

From those pictures it doesn't look as though helmet wearing is a big priority.

But that's cool - individual freedom is great.

But if any heads get cracked open, then whoever's property it is that these fine young role models are trespassing on might very well get sued for not having good enough fences.

And if that ever happens in a taxpayer-funded skater mini-park, I suppose that kind of suit will complain there weren't enough signs posted warning of risk, etc.
