Federal Courthouse Shows Some Skin

Federal Courthouse Shows Some Skin

Story Options

The new Federal Courthouse on Niagara Square is getting its shell. No, the façade of the Dulski Building isn’t being reused. The ellipse of the Courthouse is getting a ribbed pre-cast skin that will be veiled by suspended glass planes. A transparent curtain wall will front Niagara Square. According to the General Services Administration, the project is 18 percent complete.

New York City-based Kohn Pederson Fox Architects designed the $123 million, 268,000 sq.ft. building. It is expected to open in mid-2010.

Looks as if the sculpted gentleman in the top photo is taking a leak on the construction in progress... I'm just saying.

This might have historic relevance... on the site of the new building once stood a well known public bathhouse.

I love watching the progress of this project. But does anyone know if they have stopped building up? By my count, they have the steel framework in place for seven floors. I thought it was supposed to be 10. I'm hoping they still have three more floors to go. It just doesn't look tall enough right now.

Still... I can't wait to see this project when it's all complete. What a nice, dramatic addition to the Square. Soooo much better than that parking lot that sat there for years. I think it will give visitors a better impression of Buffalo. And it fills in that 'missing tooth' in Niagara Square.

Im actually more excited for the impact this will have on the Statler Hotel, Hotel Touraine, Greystone and possibly Lafayette....since all are either across the street or within a few blocks.

Oh the sadness..that the lost the Hotel Buffalo (aka Hotel Statler...the art nuveau terra cotta landmark).

and I still say that the genessee gateway and the federal building marks the persona non-grata for the convention center and the hyatt atrium. Its time for a public discussion on the future of the convention center and reopening the street grid.

That's a pretty lousy picture for the purpose of this BRO article. Maybe someone can take a picture of the building rather than a picture of the statue with a tiny portion of the building shown. Oh well, I'm sure it'll look good when completed.

I've tried to be a fan of this design but I can't. The cylindrical elevation is just incredibly banal and looks like a John Portman hotel circa 1977. It goes well wth the similarly uninspired Municipal Courthouse. Buffalo was a city of handsome architecture. The garish stuff belongs elsewhere.
