Go Veggies

By now you may have already met Genga Ponnampalam. He is a big proponent of buying locally, giving back to the Buffalo community and he’s very hip to local activism and politics. Did I mention he’s a huge fan of veggies?
Ponnampalam started Go Veggies, Inc. in 2002. His storefront is located in Tonawanda but you can find his Go Veggies concessions trailers at many events in Buffalo. Currently he can be found at the Bidwell Farmers Market on Saturdays.
Go Veggies makes all of their food from scratch in their kitchen with the help of volunteers. When it comes to purchasing ingredients, “I first look to local farmers and local businesses for produce and products,” said Ponnampalam. Only if he cannot get the ingredients from this region will he then search outside the area.
His menu currently consists of Veggie Burgers, Veggie Rolls, Veggie Sauce, Mango Pudding and snacks. Next on his list is the development of frozen vegetarian lunches with a medley of brown rice and mixed vegetables that the people of Buffalo can take with them to work.
When speaking with Ponnampalam, his passion for both the local community and eating healthy is evident. His entire family is vegetarian, which is common in Sri Lanka, his native home and residence until attending college at UB approximately 20 years ago. He’s aware that many people in this region are not vegetarian and acknowledges that getting the word out about eating healthy and improving one's health is a challenge. Despite that--or perhaps because of it--he decided to stay in Buffalo and has made it his mission to help Western New Yorkers eat well and live long, healthy lives.
Early on in his entrepreneurship, he was able to work with Massachusetts Avenue Project (M.A.P.) in creating a business model. Now he’s focusing on spreading healthy living to the Buffalo community at large. “Many people suffer from health issues that can be fixed or improved with eating better,” said Ponnampalam.

Be sure to stop by the Elmwood Bidwell Farmers Market and say ‘hi’ to Ponnampalam. If you’ve tasted his Go Veggies treats, then you know how yummy they are. Here are a few things you may not know about Ponnampalam.
•By day he is a computer systems analyst with aspirations of running Go Veggies, Inc. as a full-time job.
•If you are interested, you can purchase one of his concession trailers, and he will help train you in his vegetarian cooking business model.
•He offers catering for social events, parties, dinners, family occasions, seminars and workshops in the Buffalo Niagara area.
•If you are a burgeoning entrepreneur in need of work space, he has an industrial kitchen that can be rented. Contact him and he will be more than happy to help you out.
When asked if he has any words to share with the BR readers he said, “People can take their tax return or incentive check and spend it locally. They need to come to the farmers markets. That’s the way to help the local economy.”
To help Ponnampalam achieve his long-term goal of devoting his entire work week to a booming Go Veggies, Inc. business and to give back to the local economy you, can purchase his products at the Elmwood Bidwell Farmers Market or find retail locations at his website.

A corner joint needn't be a dive.
And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jake’s Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
“We don’t take shortcuts here at Papa Jake’s,” Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jake’s fresh and tasty menu. “I don’t want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …

I am a true Go Veggies fan and I'm not even a vegetarian. Everything is absolutely excellent and his veggie rolls are to die for!!!! Genga is bright, sincere, and an extremely nice person who is a workaholic with his family right beside him. Talk about wonderful! He's a great part of Buffalo's cultural ambiance and emerging traditions.

I like to serve the veggie rolls for dinner during the week when I don't feel like cooking. I know he sells sauce, but I usually mix a little sour cream, sriracha chili sauce and fresh chives (from the market). The potato inside the roll and sour cream are a great combo, and the sriracha adds a bunch of heat.

current freezer inventory: 4 veggie burgers & 6 2-packs of veggie rolls. I don't like mangoes, but I love the mango pudding...
excellent stuff - better than the "boxed" alternatives!

Isn't The Bidwell Market a "growers only" market? Does Mr. Ponnampalam grow his own rice and mangos?

The City of Tonawanda has been trying to get rid of the boathouses and rice paddies for years. Not only are the boathouses unsightly, but the rice paddies make the waters very difficult for navagation.

I thought they only had rice paddies in Williamsville and Amherst, who knew?
I wonder what type of vehicle he uses to tow this trailer? I wonder why he doesn't use a bike or design the trailer to be pulled behind a Prius or SMART car.

vericarl: The article states, "When it comes to purchasing ingredients, “I first look to local farmers and local businesses for produce and products,” said Ponnampalam. Only if he cannot get the ingredients from this region will he then search outside the area."
I'm sure the mangoes and rice aren't local, but I'm equally sure that some of the growers at the market use items (e.g., containers) that weren't made locally either. The point of this and other farmer's markets isn't extremism (a point clearly lost on allfit), but rather to do the best possible job to center our food economy on local production and consumption. Congrats to Ponnampalam on his successes in this regard.

I LOVE his mango pudding, very refreshing when it's hot, not too sweet or cloying, a bit of perfection.
