Joe's New York Style Pizzeria & Restaurant

It had been a long time since I’d taken the Grant Street exit off the 198. But when I did so the other day and came to the intersection of Grant and Amherst, I noticed a new business tucked in the corner of the strip plaza, in the spot once occupied by Mighty Taco. When I saw the name--Joe’s New York Style Pizzeria & Restaurant--my first reaction was skepticism. “New York Style” is such a bold declaration, promising to distinguish the product from other local pizzerias in some special way. But being a pizza junkie, I had to give their pizza a try. And I am pleased to report that the two pepperoni slices I tried were delicious. The slices were large enough to be folded (I learned the art of folding pizza during the brief period of time that I lived on Long Island and in New York City). I ordered the slices to go, with the plan to eat them at home. But the pizza didn’t stand a chance. It looked so good that I couldn’t wait. So I drove home with one hand and devoured my pizza with the other. Side note: I am convinced that driving while eating pizza is more dangerous than driving while using one’s cell phone.
Joe’s opened a few months ago on New Year’s Eve, and offers more than pizza. I actually went back the following day to try the baked ziti. Maybe you’ve encountered baked ziti that is nothing more than a ton of pasta caked with burnt mozzarella cheese. This was not the case at Joe’s. Their ziti features a blend of ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, and let’s just say I’ll be ordering it again sometime. As for what I’ll try next, that’s a tough call, but the lasagna and calzones are definitely in the running.
As I write about a pizzeria, a pet peeve comes to mind: You have a craving for a slice, you walk into a place, and no slices are available. Or worse, there are two slices sitting under a heat lamp looking as though they are three days old. Against your better judgment you order them, and being that they taste disgusting, you never return to the pizzeria. This pet peeve does not apply to Joe’s. The two times that I visited there was an ample supply of slices that appeared as though they had just left the oven.
I’m always looking for the next great slice of pizza. Having come across Joe’s by chance, I’m wondering if I’m not aware of any places that are off the beaten path. Any suggestions, dear readers?

A corner joint needn't be a dive.
And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jake’s Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
“We don’t take shortcuts here at Papa Jake’s,” Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jake’s fresh and tasty menu. “I don’t want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …

A lot of great pizza here in Buffalo (for whole pies, have you tried Milano's on Englewood? Or even Di Marco's on Englewood? La Pizza on Hertel?)
For slices either location of La Nova is hard to beat. If you're on W. Ferry, walk down to Russ's Bakery (@ W. Ferry & Grant) after for Buffalo's best donuts or try the sfingi (sp)!!! It's something like a heavy angel food cake make into a round donut type-thing. Heavenly!

I really like this place, Todd. But I have to say, (since you asked) that as much good pizza as Buffalo has, Campieri's on 888 Main is my fav. It's amazing how often we see people log onto this site, go back and find an old story about 888 Main and leave a rave review. That doesn't happen often on YUM, but it seems that people love this place as much as I do. Since it flies under the radar, I think a lot of people feel like it's special, like they discovered it. The menu is small, but the pizza is really out of this world. Look for an upcoming feature in YUM.

I agree with the Campieri's fans, 888 Main has great pizza. I like the white pizza with tomatoes and basil. It's so simple and yummy, and he makes a great crust. I've also been to Joe's a few times, and it's really hard to compare the two pizzas. They're totally different styles. Try the white pizza with spinach at Joe's. Very good, monsterous slices with an extra thin crust. Guess it just depends on what you're in the mood for.

I think Romeo and Juliet's has great pizza. They are smaller Italian style pizzas and they are excellent.

Off the Post - Drove by the corner of Grant and Amherst and saw the building of my mid 90's watering hole, Spanky's torn down. Sad - but progress.
Has Buff State figured out if they are going to house more students off campus? Piece Arrow? Tonawanda St?

Zetti's in the Ghetto Tops Plaza near UB South Campus. Best NY Style I've had from here. The owner is from Queens.

Joe's NY Style is incredible and not just for the pizza - I have been there repeatedly since it opened and have tried their whole menu. All their food is homemade - and there is an extensive lunch and dinner selection that includes eggplant rollantini, veal caprese, cavatelli sole, chicken scarparo I could just go on and on. The white pizza is to die for... and don't forget those little $.25 garlic knots -- yummy!!

Back in my Kaisertown days (24+ yrs ago) I often patronized Molino's on Clinton Street and I thought it was one of the best. Anyone know how they are holding up?

Off-topic: What happened to the Cavern Tavern on Grant St.? New York style pizza on Allen Street was a huge hit with my former co-workers. There was a running battle between NY-style and "regular" (read Buffalo) pizza. During my first week, I was asked to take sides - the Regulars were disappointed that I went with the NY style group. Oh well.

I remember going to a brick oven (one of the few in NYC) pizzaria in Bleeker St. I don't know if it's still there or not. They served wafer thin (well, maybe not quite wafer thin but not much more) pizzas which were ordered one per person since they were so thin. I loved it. I'm wondering if any pizzaria in Buffalo makes this kind of pizza.

I am in a different restaurant everyday I can I can say I have tried alot of different local Pizza, Some of my favorites are Blasdell Pizza on Southwestern in Hamburg, Imperial Pizza on Abbott and Santoras Phase II. You know what they all have in common ??? They use San Benito as their sauce.. A little C-store on Two Rod and Clinton Kwik Fill has some of the best pie I have had anywhere. Bocce's has probably one of the worst pies now. Use to be good in the 80's

Sorry, we tried it a few weeks ago - all ready to jump in and enjoy, the five of us, and were we disappointed! The sauce was reminiscent of Campbells Tomato Soup, the crust bland and the pepperoni was practically raw. In two words - it sucked.
Happy to have Manhattan Pizza on Delaware, though - they rock!
