Niagara Cafe

Not quite downtown, but just moments away, the Niagara Café and BBQ offers authentic Latino delights for those who venture to Buffalo’s west side.
Proprietor Raul Hernandez, a past recipient of the Thomas Foster Memorial Business Award, prepares the assorted menu and daily specials luring many to Niagara Street.
Nestled amongst obvious signs of redevelopment, this kitchen is responsible for more than ten years of great, moderately priced food and tireless community service. This feat becomes more impressive, when one considers the difficulties in business retention for low-income communities.
It was in the spirit of community that this restaurant first began. “I want to be an example to young men on the street that hard work pays off,” said Hernandez. And what an example he is! His daughter Lillian Hernandez, celebrates her third anniversary as owner of Latin Romance; a neighboring lingerie boutique.
Niagara Café is about more than just food; it defines cultural pride and community recognition. Hernandez looks forward to the day when Latinos are recognized for being more than just minorities. He is a self-defined hard working businessman with respect for all humanity, a sentiment confirmed by his faithful customers.
Unfortunately, compliments can soon become insults as new customers reveal the imagined risks incurred by coming to the neighborhood. “It’s time to fix the problem,” said Hernandez. He believes current redevelopment efforts will aid this process and expressed satisfaction thus far with Mayor Byron Brown and his administration. “This is his favorite restaurant, and he eats here regularly”, said Hernandez quoting Oswaldo Mestre, City of Buffalo Complaint Director, from a Buffalo Spree article posted within.
The café’s selection of quaint booths remains in steady rotation with neighborhood locals and working professionals seeking new taste sensations.
Enjoy the rotisserie chicken (pictured above) or roasted pork, Niagara Café has something for everyone’s palate. Most selections are served with a side of rice (both yellow and white), beans or pigeon peas, and fried plantain.
In fact, the food selection is more than just flavorful, it is also good for you. Just ask Independent Health, who recently qualified Niagara Cafe's Stewed Chicken and Rice as a 2007 Taste of Buffalo Healthy Option. For those who can’t wait for this weekend, you may find the recipe online at www.healthyoptions.com.
Niagara Café and BBQ is a palpable sign the entrepreneurial spirit still exists on the lower west side.

A corner joint needn't be a dive.
And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jake’s Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
“We don’t take shortcuts here at Papa Jake’s,” Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jake’s fresh and tasty menu. “I don’t want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …

I started going to this place when it opened as the Wishbone. It was owned by George Melendez, who was also a Buffalo Police Officer. After George retired from the force, he devoted his efforts full time to the restaurant. His food was very good. Chicken, ribs, pernil (roast pork), and the specialty ethnic items. Since it has been under new ownership, it has slipped dramatically. The food is still good, but the cleanliness of the facility leaves much to be desired. I have stopped going there, when in the past I was there about twice a week for dinner. Hopefully, the new ownership will read this, clean the place up, and I will be back in a flash.

Great food with great service, that's all a restaurant can aspire for, and Niagara Cafe has it. Plus the lunch prices are so reasonable, you can fill up on a few bucks. And every time I go there, I'm treated as if I'm an old friend of the family.
