Oktoberfest...still

Story Options

Last week Adam informed you of the Oktoberfest celebration at the Central Terminal, but this week there is another Oktoberfest event happening in the city. Odd you say? Odd that there are not only two Oktoberfest events but that they are on two different days, both of which are in September? Oktoberfest is not like traditional American holidays; Valentine's Day is always February 14th, St. Patrick's is always March 17, etc. Unlike our single day celebrations, Oktoberfest is a festival that traditionally runs for 16-17 days prior to, and including, the first Sunday of October. That's a whole lot of partying.

This Saturday, the Ukrainian-American Civic Center is hosting their own Oktoberfest celebration complete with beer, food, and dancing. First and foremost, Ukrainian and German beer will be available along with wine and liquor for you nonbelievers. The popular Obolon Ukrainian beer plus Spaten and Spaten Oktoberfest will be available with other Canadian and American labels. Eric Spar himself, of Spar's Sausage fame, will be on site preparing bratwurst, smoked bavarian sausage, and weisswurst. To top it off, one of Buffalo's most energetic and fun bands (and a personal favorite of mine), Those Idiots will be performing. If you've been to any Dyngus Day party of size, you've surely seen Those Idiots. They'll be performing traditional German Oktoberfest songs along with some crowd favorites including their polka-covers of Johnny Cash and The Ramones.

There is a $10 cover charge, but parking is free!

One of these days, I shall put together a vegetarian Oktoberfest complete with Boca Sausage and non-alcoholic beer. Hey, non-drinking veggies can love German tradition too!
