That picture we selected is of Ralph Wilson during his prime, when his mere image filled the room like that of a lion on a hunt. No wonder, he was earlier a part owner of the Detroit Lions, but he branched into full ownership of the seventh team in the AFL league, supposedly to be placed in Miami, but then—no, it was settled on Buffalo.

The Bills haven’t had the best start of a season this year, but let’s not go losing our heads, like when On This Day in 1793, Marie Antoinette lost hers. She was the wife of Louis XVI, and was guillotined at the height of the French Revolution.

The Bills have had a hard season so far, but there’s hope yet, so let’s not all get hung up on it, like the ten fellows who were condemned as war criminals at the end of WWII’s Nuremberg trials and were all hanged On This Day in 1946.

But those are other worlds and other times. This is Bills Country. The Buffalo Bills celebrate their 48th birthday this month, having begun in October, 1959 as the seventh team of the AFL. Ralph Wilson paid $25,000 for a franchise that’s now estimated at over $500 million.

Part of Mr. Wilson’s first year payroll expenses went to a player named WR Elbert Dubenion, and it was On This Day, October 16, 1968 – that Dubenion retired, the last of the original Buffalo Bills. He was subsequently hired as a college scout for the team. The official Buffalo Bills site gives daily updates of special points in their history from On This Day…

It was Also On This Day on October 16, 1977 – we saw the LOWEST SCORING GAME IN BILLS HISTORY. The Bills beat the Atlanta Falcons 3-0 in the lowest-scoring game in team history. Talk about Norwood’s secure place in history—update your files to include an Upside of that story with the distinction of Bills’ Kicker Neil O'Donoghue's second-quarter field goal that was the Only Score of the game.

And also On This Day on October 16, 1989 -- FRANK REICH RALLIES BILLS -- Starting for injured Jim Kelly, team backup Frank Reich rallied the Bills in the fourth quarter, leading a 23-20 victory over the already unbeaten Los Angeles Rams. This historic moment (taking place before a national Monday Night Football audience) took place in front of a Rich Stadium crowd of 76,231.

The Bills are named after Buffalo Bill Cody, after Wilson held a local naming contest. They’ve seen struggle and success as few other teams, and are still guided by their original legendary owner. In hard start seasons like this one, it’s good to remember the high points over the span of time.

Wilson was a guiding force in AFL policies that ensured success, such as gate and television revenue sharing. As Wikipedia reports, “in 1961, with the rival Oakland Raiders in financial difficulty, Wilson loaned the club $400,000 and also would be willing to loan money to Billy Sullivan of the Patriots. Wilson helped keep those franchises afloat, likely saving the entire league from folding.”

If anyone in the AFL or NFL was every a Team Player, it would be Ralph Wilson. He’s from the old school of character and honor. In November 1963, it was Ralph Wilson who lobbied successfully to have American Football League games postponed the Sunday after JFK's assassination. The National Football League games went on. It’s that character that guides the Buffalo Bills and so, too, the spirit of Buffalo.

In 2018 Mr. Wilson will be 100. And you never know—people are living older. We may be tuning in on a rainy Sunday in 2018 and watch the camera’s scan the owner’s box and see Wilson cheering. One thing’s for sure, we’ll see that scene forever, regardless of the physical presence—but for the sometimes stronger presence in spirit of a man time-honored and who still honors time well.

It just so happens, Ralph Wilson, that today is Bosses’ Day across America. Cheers Boss!

Bills, you make us wanna shout: Hang in there! We will too!

That’s the news from On This Day from Buffalo.

Ralph needs to sell the team to someone who will keep it in Buffalo and make a committment to winning. All Ralph does anymore is cry about revenue. A younger, more determined, savy businessman can and will allow the Bills to succeed in Buffalo once Ralph passes the team on or passes away.

The key is finding someone who will want to buy the Bills AND keep them in Buffalo.

If the Bills are going to stay in Buffalo, they will have to be purchased from someone with local ties. If not, the odds of them moving to a growing city are very strong. The challenge is Buffalo is not friendly to people with money, to business owners. Maybe the one of the local unions could purchase the Bills. They seem to run everything else.

At the end of the day, the Bills will be gone when Ralph parts with the Bills the current lease with the county is up.

From what I have heard, rumors or not, Jim Kelly, Thurmoa Thomas, and Dan Marino are working on keeping the Bills in Buffalo. In fact if anyone else has heard this please reply.

    halljd39,

    Fully agree. No rumor.

They all seem to be here or else moving here...something's a'foot...I bet if five of them, led by Kelly, came up with 20 million each, the bank would finance the other $450 million. Maybe count Wilson's two daughters in too, who are active in the organization. Bills are staying in Buffalo.

Give this rumor major weight-- we'll watch and we'll see, soon after this season.

Figure that the Bills' value went up about 100 million last year (there were up-adjustements of ALL teams) and Wilson would likely want to see how team does this year...then, right after season, they'll weigh then current price values, and likely Kelly's Bankers will help him and others close the deal.

Are you guys going to vote for the half-billion dollar bond issue to keep the Bills in town and give them a stadium worthy of their history? Put your money where your mouth is. Either your'e prepared to foot the Bill(s) or you get to watch someone with a lot of cash and little patience move the team to San Antonio.

Sorry guys there is no chance of the Bills staying in Buffalo. The reason I know this is there is no chance of a new stadium being built downtown and to the scope needed.

See there is a huge difference between a Millionaire like Ralph buying a franchise for 25k and having it grow to be worth 500M or so. Ralph did not have to spend or secure funding for the 500m. He got in early.

If a group of investors is going to spend 500M on the team, they are going to need to be able to make money. Either to pay off the loan as one suggested or make a profit. Either way, the Buffalo Bills as a franchise does not make enough money to pay off a loan like this AND fund the payroll to be a competitive team.

The franchise is already stretching far and wide to sell tickets and even if there were corporate sponsors lined up around the block, there is not a stadium in place to capitalize on the opportunity.

    Sorry to burst anyones bubble.

Members of our family were having a discussion over the weekend about the name "Buffalo Bills". Out-of-town friends asked, "What's a 'Bill", and what does it have to do with the city of Buffalo?" Of course, we knew the answer and had quite a difficult time explaining how a Wild West guy was connected to the city, which is no connection but the result of a naming contest. Wouldn't it be great if today's folks came up with a name that actually connected to the area?

I like Ralph, he could have moved this team many times... Everyone sais that he holds the city hostage, nope, not that way! Take a look around the league and see how many cities are bending over to make their teams stay (please do not give me the Bob Kraft no tax bs or the NY Yankees no tax and bonus crud). Wilson should have moved this team long ago; LA, Toronto, St Louis, Tennessee, anywhere would have doubled the value, sorry to say! Ralph Wilson is a good solid guy and Buffalo should appreciate him rather than villify him!

There's nothing at all wrong with Ralph Wilson...except that he's not a billionaire. Sadly, that's a major crime in the rareified world of pro sports. Wilson isn't holding anybody hostage, he just absolutely relies on the public good will and more importantly, the public weal of Buffalo, if the Bills are to have a shot at a future here. He hasn't sold out which is amazing given the market value of the franchise and the fact that selling would possibly get him into that billionaire status. What is he to do? He's like a rancher:he "lives poor and dies rich". It's up to Buffalo to figure out a way to set the Bills up in perpetuity. Green Bay, with its lousy 110,000 residents did it, what the hell is our problem? The public won't support a stadium? Tell them it's a Frank Lloyd Wright design unearthed from the bowels of the boathouse!

I did also hear Jim Kelly and Thurman may be interested in keeping the Bills in WNY, but I don't think they have that much money between them.

Related to the Bills, if you haven't seen this already, Chunky soup has a contest to help a local food pantry if the Bills win the total number of clicks. There is a field goal game where you can get 7 extra clicks a day if you make them. Bills are currently in 7th place. If you delete your cookies you can vote more than once a day. Tell your friends to vote daily for the Bills so we can win for the food pantry and our local pride :): http://www.chunky.com/ClickForCansVote.aspx

I think the best way to keep the Bills in WNY is for Ralph to will the team to Erie county or his heirs can donate it to the county which may be considered a 'charitable donation' that they would write off on his estate/taxes. He always mentions the tax burden on his estate so donating the team would be a nice write off :) It would be like Green Bay that is owned by the local folks. I know the NFL says they will never allow another Green Bay arrangement, but with our local boy Goodell at the top maybe they can change the rules for our small market team.
