Open Discussion with Al Coppola and Ron Rienas

Tomorrow evening, Ron Rienas, General Manager of the Public Bridge Authority, will meet with former State Senator Al Coppola in order to discuss the Peace Bridge and plaza expansion once again, and word is that Hillary Clinton is sending representatives.
In addition to the aesthetics, health concerns and historical impact to the immediate area, final funding has not been previously disclosed and is obviously an important element in the ongoing controversy over the entire proposed project. Now in the draft stages, will the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) bring forth details about the funding that will cover the project? Will Rienas be able to respond to this question tomorrow?
It has been said that the total cost of the expansion and the bridge could come to $700 million, so this is a good time to ask how much and from where the money will come. This should be a spirited discussion, so if you have any questions or a statement to make, bring it tomorrow.
The First Amendment Club is hosting the final New Peace Bridge Q and A Session tomorrow at the Polish Cadets.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

Moving the US Plaza & creating a Niagara Street Gateway is warranted but spending $700 million that includes a new bridge that isn't needed is a waste of money. Traffic counts are have consistently been declining for a decade.
How about spending some of that on the outer harbor bridges where the money is really needed.

I agree, no need for a new bridge. This is about attracting truck traffic (and revenue) that would only cause more health problems in the area residents. Trucks are inefficient and are responsible for 66% of particulate pollution along roadways. Rail is the future and is much more environmentally friendly and less disruptive to residents.

Anyone going to get Bill Zimmerman drunk and have him join in? That was so classy the first time around.

If another bridge is needed, then Grand Island is the place it should be...there is moer than enough room for as big a plaza as is needed now and in the future.
I think we are going to continue to see a delay until the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton directs her office to renegotiate the plaza into canada in a form of shared border management. I think there was a big delay hoping that Obama and a democratic administration would change the direction of Chertoff, Homeland Security [deleted]. Now that Obama/Clinton are in....I think it is going to be revisited.
Im not against the bridge...but I think most people dont want the 2nd bridge if it means a larger plaza.
I do agree with BlackRockLifer. We actually have unused rail yards in Buffalo and Niagara Falls and un-used Rail Crossings. We could easily use our rail yards for transhipment facilities and move more trucks to rail.

Run the traffic through Detroit. We have enough opportunity here.

carl- Truck traffic provides NO benefit or opportunities to the host community, just health problems.
