Photo Contest Winner

Thank you to all the readers who submitted photos to Buffalo Rising’s photography contest. This week’s winner is Alex Shaver. Alex receives a $100 gift certificate from Duo for this winning photo (above).
We received many inspiring, adorable and interesting photos. Below is runner-up Matthew Perrello’s photo submitted with a caption.
There will be another BRO contest announced this week. It requires creativity, but not the kind seen through a camera lens. Stay tuned!

WHAT? Bass Pro Is Coming To Buffalo? **** Just Another False Alarm.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

The most obvious technical problem with the winning photo is that it's not straight. All of the buildings are canted to the right. It also lacks a point of view: what does this photo say about its subject? What makes it different from every other photo taken of the same subject?

Thanks for your input. I would say that based on the crosswalk at the bottom, the picture is indeed straight. Beyond that criticism, we all seemed to think it was a really nice picture and worthy of the gift certificate. There were quite a lot of submissions and this is the one we all liked the best so based on that, he wins.
We are not photography critics and created this contest in an attempt to get some good pictures of the area and to give something back to the readers. I think we accomplished both and I'd like to thank everyone who submitted a photo. We will be running a different type of contest next week and hopefully BuffedOut will enter.
Nice picture Alex, enjoy your dinner.

Congrats to the winners!
I submitted two photographs and according to my flickr counter they weren't looked at. What would be the best way for people to submit to future contests?

how do you find level on a round planet? look close, everything has a natural curve. the streets center looks flat, and everything else just follows the natural curvature of the earth. the only technical problem I can see is that you can't afford the earth's curvature imaging input lens for your Polaroid!!! straight pictures have no imagination!!!!

The biggest problem with the photo is the lack of people.
Ghost town, USA, sadly pretending.

it's obvious, the photo was taken early morning or late day, as" NOT" to show pedestrian motion, or moving traffic in this black & white "STILL" photo!!!

Good try, meanoldman. The time of day doesn't seem to matter. The photo ain't no Stieglitz.

It is the lack of people that makes it poignant.

whynotguy, we absolutely looked at your pics, more than once. Not sure why your flickr thing didn't pick it up but i assure you that every submission we received, we looked at.
And i still say the winning picture isn't crooked.

Yes, Brett, the photo is crooked: look at the buildings, especially those in the background. They are tilted, appearing to slide to the right. There are many ways to fix this problem in a photo-editing program such as Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop elements or others. Use the horizontal line of the walk-over bridge in the background to straighten it out. This is simple photo-editing 101.

I just realized my head was crooked when i was looking at it.
Either way, Alex wins.
