Members of the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) are in town to discuss solutions regarding the city's lack of access to the waterfront. I was able to capture a podcast last evening when George Grassers' organization, Partnership for a Livable WNY, invited former Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist (CNU) and and CNU's Norm Marshall to speak about some of their preliminary findings. If you want a simple explanation... or how about a simple picture of what their vision is for Buffalo's waterfront, take a drive up to Toronto and see what has been accomplished there. At-grade boulevards replacing fast-moving freeways? It appears to be working in every other city that is going in a pro-urban-living direction.
Members of the Congress for New Urbanism will be speaking twice today. Once along the water and once at City Hall. It will be interesting to see if their message is heard. We will be covering those engagements as they occur. We will also be presenting schematics that the team has prepared that show what our Outer Harbor could look like if it were to include boulevards surrounded by commercial and residential buildings... and of course parks to allow waterfront access.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.

The best thing hes said:
Buffalo does not need to serve as a speed through for people coming form another town to another place. Buffalo does not need to sacrifice its property so that people can quickly travel through the city. The city should build only that which increases its value.
This highway is of no benefit to the city its self. If that is the case how can you justify spending future money on its maintenance.

I hope that higgins reads this:
Higgins you are becoming the enemy of Buffalo not its savior. Your stand on demolishing homes and businesses for the Peace Bridge Plaza and now your stand on the skyway and southtown connector are diametrically opposite to what the community and the citizens of Buffalo and WNY want.
how quickly you earned the respect ...and how quickly you are pissing it away!
