Roller Girls Hit Hunger Hard

Roller Girls Hit Hunger Hard

Story Options

Those who aren't familiar with the league might think that the Queen City Roller Girls is all about fast skating, hard hitting and rough-around-the-edges sex appeal. Well, it is. But there's also much more to this growing league than that.

At any given time, you can find these ladies in action on and off the rink throughout the Buffalo area; part of their collective goal is to "organize community events that will raise money for local charities," and they do that in a variety of ways. Each bout (derby speak for "game") features a different beneficiary - a portion of the profits is donated to that organization, and in some cases fans can also donate items to the organization at the door in exchange for reduced admission prices. In addition to the bout beneficiaries, league members come out in droves to volunteer at area charity events, at least once a month.

In December, they're helping out the Food Bank of WNY: you can find them on Friday the 12th at the Tops Friendly Market at 2101 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo, and also at 4777 Transit Road in Depew, collecting donations and canned goods outside the stores for the "Food 2 Families" one day food drive. Sponsored by WGRZ-TV Channel 2, the Food Bank will have representatives at 5 different Tops locations until 11PM, taking donations in front of the stores in the form of food as well as funds. Bring a donation of your own or purchase a "Little Brown Bag of Hope", available in $5, $10 and $20 sizes. Stop by to help out local families--and meet some of the QCRG skaters before the season officially starts with the first bout on January 3rd.

    Awesome job!

How come they don't have any bouts in any of the Buffalo rinks? I have wanted to go several times, but I always get shot down because nobody ever wants to schlep out to North Tonawanda. Skateland on Ferry, and Arcadia on Amherst are still in operation, aren't they?

Hoss, apparently the Rainbow Rink was the only one willing to host the league when it started 3 years ago, and they also host practices there throughout the week (all year long). Not sure about those other rinks you mentioned... if it keeps growing the way it has been, who knows what will happen in the future.

Being a former southtowns girl myself, Tonawanda was pretty foreign to me too--but it's actually only about 15 minutes away from my house on Richmond now. Totally worth it for some great derby action!

Yeah, I'm gonna make it a point to go this coming winter. I'll leave the rest of the haters behind and go solo if I have to. It looks like a total blast. Do they serve beer at these bouts?

It does seem like they are growing pretty rapidly. Maybe the other rinks will see the light, and they can start having turf battles and such. It would be great to just walk/bike on over.

They sure do serve beer! It's a really fun, party atmosphere and the crowd really gets into it--I was pretty surprised at the first bout I went to. Just make sure to hold onto your beer & for the first row fans do not put it on the floor; it can be knocked over by a knocked over roller girl ;)

My daughter is a ref for the Maine Roller Derby club in Portland, and hopes to be in town to see the Jan. 3 bout. Goes by the name Ruth of All Evil. http://tinyurl.com/5e24bb
