Soldier's Place Sounds Off

Story Options

There's an effort to bring back the missing cannons at Soldier's Place circle. This is the historic circle that connects Lincoln, Chapin and Bidwell where there has been a mixture of tree plantings and greenery since the 30's when the artillery pieces were removed. Word has it that the cannons were constantly being hit by vehicles and were eventually sold for scrap per the instructions of the Parks Commissioner at the time. There had been three guns standing guard', each pointing down a respective parkway.

The conceptual drawing featured here is a representation of what Soldier's Circle would look like if the cannons were replaced. Linda Matt, owner of Positively Main Street is one of the people behind the drive to restore Soldier's Place. She is helping to coordinate the effort that includes researching cannon replacements, identifying funding sources, and working with the Olmsted Parks Conservancy to coordinate a joint effort. A number of petitions are currently circulating at the following locations: KC's Fitness, Quaker Bonnet Eatery, and Positively Main Street. For those interested in handing around your own petition, contact Linda at Positively Main Street.

This circle was clear-cut of trees, following last year's storm. Just replace the trees with Princeton Elms, please. If people must have a cannon, the Historical Society has one or two, laying outside in a parking lot.

If it's going to be called Soldiers Place Circle, it must have some sort of militaristic aspect to it. If we can't find Cannons, put something newer like howitzers. The army decomissions its armaments all the time. There's entire graveyards of scrap armaments that a big city like Buffalo wouldn't have a problem buying for cheap. Maybe a nice Abrams tank or two.

Nice idea, but trees would be more valuable to the environment and add visually to the space.

Placing a beautiful fountain in the center of the circle has also been suggested, which I think would be spectacular along with the cannons. This is the heart of the Olmsted design, and it deserves a stunning visual presence.

I always thought that the nearby Griffis sculpture should be in the center of this circle. I think Griffis insisted that it not be there.

The Pan Am Fountain would look really good there....but my preference would be a Niagara Street Rotary for it.
