Spotted On Elmwood

Spotted On Elmwood

Story Options

The Spot signs have gone up announcing the coffee shop's pending expansion into the former New World Record space. For a while it looked as if Brodo was on its way in as well. At least that was the original intention. After expecting movement inside the location, nothing happened and people began to wonder if the entire deal had fallen through. Part of the deal did go south, but Spot has stepped up to the plate and is taking over the entire Elmwood location.

In the end, this is a good fit for the former New World locale. The corner café is constantly packed and is in need of more room. If it were not for the patios, I'm not sure what the customers would do. When it gets cold out, the patios become less and less appealing, though they never appear to close even in the dead of winter. Now more customers will be able to chill inside... especially when it's chilly outside. I'm just excited to see that large, empty storefront on its way to being filled again.

How many times have expansions led to closings? Too many & that's a really big area to be adding.

well, there are more than a few people who avoid this location because they know it is hit or miss for a seat. I think this expansion will lead to more people going to spot on a more regular basis. Downtown is a great location to sit and do work for a couple hours, constantly buying stuff to snack on and drink. I never once went to this location because I couldn't setup show for a couple hours. No Wifi, no seats... it was relegated to just a place to meet people and then go somewhere else.

I would go now, I avoided this location due to lack of seating. I would suggest during the reno, clean the existing store also. [kind of gundgy]

Yeah, Spot on Elmwood looks terrible inside--dingy, dirty, and way overlit at night. A cafe needs ambiance and charm--Spot has none.

A much needed expansion me thinks. Some space for lounging, and maybe some low key performance would be killer. Hopefully they'll expand the kitchen and get another espresso machine to compensate for the potential added business.

I think that more cafés need to have heat lamps outside on the patios so we can enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. Of course that's not possible if it's a snow storm outside. I've lived in Paris for 8 years and am currently living in London where most cafés with a patio have heat lamps. It's a shame Buffalo doesn't follow the trend!

Kerizma, I just got back from Paris and the patios in all had heat lamps. It was very nice to sit outside and enjoy an espresso or a meal and the patios were all crowded. What I wouldn't give for Buffalo to have an outdoor crepe vendor or a pastry shop like "Paul."
