The Bidwell Concert Series - What did you think?

Story Options

From the Elmwood Village Association:

Judging by attendance this year (Tuesday Night Concert Series), we are very pleased the response from the community and we hope you enjoyed the concerts this year. We certainly enjoyed bringing them to you. We look forward to returning again in 2009 with another exciting program of musical offerings

In the meantime, we invite your thoughtful comments and suggestions about how we can make the concert series at Bidwell Parkway even better next year. Please respond with your thoughts and ideas. We sincerely appreciate them. Finally, a special thanks to the musicians and series sponsors who made our Tuesday night events so special.

The musicians included the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Neville Francis and the Riddim Posse, Babik, Outer Circle Orchestra, Latin Jazz Project, Doug Yeomans and the Lo Blu Flame, and the Steam Donkeys!

From - Scott 'The Sign Wizard':

Kim Mitchell was on Q107 the other day during drive time giving accolades to Buffalo/Niagara for their collective outdoor concert events. He mentioned how Artpark and TITS are free events. While talking about Buffalo, he said "maybe it's about time Toronto got ahead of the curve in the free concert scene like Buffalo." When is the last time you heard someone say that TO needs to catch up with BUF when they weren't talking hockey?

the only problem as far as I am concerned is it is finished for the season. One of the most enjoyable summer events to date!

This is unrelated to the bidwell concert series but it does have to do with the success of Bidwell and the other parks around the neighborhood.

In this time of high gas prices, school field trips to the historical museum, science museum, botanical gardens, art galleries, or tours of local companies may be hard for schools to finance.

But I remember how wonderful it was as a local Buffalonian going to a combination public/parochial school to attend the field trips to a local park for an extended picnic lunch (soda and choice of peanut butter or baloney sandwiches).

I would remind local schools and local teachers how important it is to bring those kids out of the school (well escorted by volunteer parents) to a neighborhood park. Seeing these kids chaperoned walking down the street, playing in the park, just changes the entire dynamic of the neighborhood and dynamic of the school.

For many they create life long childhood memories bonded to our parks and parkways.

i was so pleased that the series was extended into august. it is a fantastic event and seems very well run. i suppose my only suggestion would be more port-o-johns because the lines seemed rather long at times.

From the huge amounts of people that i saw at these the couple times i was biking through and happened upon the event I would assume it was very successful. Congrats on a job well done.

I did like how one of the concerts drew a larger hispanic group. I remember hearing a lot of spanish around for one of the shows and it was nice ot see the different hoods mix a little bit. People are people and everyone is looking for a good time.

Also what was going on at MLK Park today.. Huge tent and tons of people as I made my way through to the Clinton-Bailey market this morning.

This year's series was great- I made it to almost every one. The only negative for me (which has also happened in previous years)- was the BPO asking children not to dance.

I had the chance to take in about a half of one of these concerts (with BPO) earlier in the summer, and loved it. I thought it was such a brilliant way to make use of Bidwell Parkway that I looked for a way to work a picture of it into my article on Great Streets (www.buffalorising.com/story/ten_qualities_of_a_great_stree). It was great to see all the families, and I thought the portable bandshell was uber-cool.

It's part of what makes city living great to be able to walk, bike, rollerblade, or hop a bus to an event like this - and Buffalo's summer climate lends itself to these outdoor events. In my view, the city and EVA are wise to leverage these natural advantages to the max.

Can someone tell me why Buffalo completely dies by Sep 1?

Why not continue all these concerts into the fall?

    Gaustad,

Because Buffalo has the misfortune of being geographically located in the Great Lakes region of the United States. By Sept. 1st, summer is over, the ice boom is being assembled, and groundhogs are searching for cozy digs....see ya next year!

The Bidwell series has quickly become my favorite gig in the city. Great vibe - beautiful setting. Another reason why I love this city.
