The Mannequin Project
“The Mannequin Project” will be on display at College Street Gallery from August 2nd-30th, with opening night this Saturday from 8-10PM, attended by artist Marc Burgess. This exhibit from the New York City photographer features artistic depictions of mannequins.
“By giving humanistic qualities to mannequins, their ability to adapt to extreme changes in urban trends and fashion, as well as endure constant facelifts, they are able to influence society without taking a breath,” says Burgess of his muses.
Burgess has been involved with photography for several decades. After successfully pursuing a modeling career post-college, that took him throughout Europe, he landed jobs working for G.F. Ferre and Playboy. Burgess continued studying in New York City, concentrating on photography, and his work landed him in Beijing and Shanghai documenting pre-Olympic festivals.
Burgess’s inspirations came from the influence of pioneer photographers Steven Klein, David LaChapelle and Annie Leibovitz, combined with his love of mannequins. His work stems from editorial and fashion photography and pays close attention to composition and style.
Burgess’s first piece, “Europ3an Blondes” was created after viewing an exhibit of Hubertus Hohenlohe in Vienna. Hi first sequence of photographs, “The Mannequin Series” debuted in the spring of 2007, and has made appearances at Sapphire, Jade, and the W Hotel Times Square in October 2007. In addition, "Town Gossip" appeared in the May/June 2007 issue of The Puck Review magazine, as the series has been well received. His third series, “The Mannequin Project” will make its exclusive debut in Buffalo.
