The Zen of Sushi- A BR Contest You Want to Win!!

Buffalo has never seen an event like The Zen of Sushi. Held at The Executive Performance Center with seatings on both Thursday, May 1 and Friday, May 2, The Zen of Sushi is an in-depth look a the world of sushi. It will be my pleasure, in the ambiance of the stunning Executive Performance Center, to take you on an entertaining tour through the history of sushi, its customs and components. We'll look at the traditions that govern this vastly popular cuisine, suggest some tips for the ordering and enjoyment of sushi, and we'll examine its role in America's current food culture.
This event will be a relaxed and enjoyable evening full of interesting facts about sushi culture. Even better, it will be accompanied by a fantastic, multi-course Japanese meal prepared by Johnson & Wales graduate and nutritionist, Chef Avi Altman. Chef Altman runs a successful catering business in addition to his unique position as chef to the Executive Performance Center.
The fish and shellfish used to prepare this meal will be of the same quality used by Western New York's finest sushi restaurants, flown in fresh from Hawaii and prepared with skill and diligence. Just look at the evening's menu:

Miso Soup with Edamame
Yellow Fin Tuna with Avocado, Asian Pear and Daikon Salad

If you'd rather not take the chance of missing out on tickets, you can contact the Executive Performance Center and make your reservations today. YUM'S Zen of Sushi Contest
The photo below depicts items commonly associated with quality sushi. Do you know the proper name of each? We are looking for the name of the specific item, not its ingredients (for example the answer to B. is not "salmon" or "sashimi"). Please email your answers to YUM and don't forget to type "Zen" into the subject line. Entries with four or more correct answers will be entered in the drawing to win tickets. One entry per person, please. The Zen of Sushi contest ends on Sunday, April 20 at 5PM. Winners will be notified by email on Monday, April 21.
Good luck!

A corner joint needn't be a dive.
And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jake’s Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
“We don’t take shortcuts here at Papa Jake’s,” Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jake’s fresh and tasty menu. “I don’t want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …

freelance chef? I take that to mean unemployed chef, no? I think sushi in Bflo is very lacking, esp living so close to Toronto. so what are Altman's credentials? Otherwise it sounds like a unique event.

simcoe,
I appreciate your concern and have therefore clarified Chef Avi's current employment status in the body of the story. Although the terms 'freelance' and 'consultant' do often equal the term 'unemployed', I assure you that that is not the case here.

What a great contest, the prize sounds delicious. This is a hard one though, because I want to name the individual ingredients for some of them. I just ate at Seabar this weekend, but had the "beef on weck" roll, so that certainly doesn't help with these pictures...by the way, Seabar was great and my husband's sushi (which did contain fish) was extremely fresh and wonderful.

Simcoe, maybe an enterprising restauranteur in Toronto could build a sushi carousel that reaches Buffalo to supply all you poor deprived souls.
