UB Bulls Win MAC Championship

Throw away your Bills jerseys and retire your Sabres gear.
Buffalo finally has a champion in our midst. And it's the UB Bulls.
The Bulls, a 14.5 point underdog in tonight's MAC championship game, upset the undefeated Ball State Cardinals to claim their first-ever MAC championship. While the Bulls had already secured their first-ever Bowl appearance, this win represents a breakthrough accomplishment for the program.
With two defensive touchdowns and a solid offensive performance, UB beat the Cardinals 42-24. Quarterback Drew Wiley threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns and Naaman Roosevelt finished with 116 yards receiving.
Tonight's historic win is a culmination of a remarkable program turnaround executed by Turner Gill. Before Coach Gill, the Bulls was 10 games in 7 seasons. In their 8 previous games against ranked opponents, the Bulls were winless and had scored just 70 points. Tonight, they scored 42 points and beat an undefeated 12th ranked team.
Now let's just hope Dick Jauron was watching.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

This is a tremendous accomplishment for the entire UB community and for the region. The Bulls team had a cinderella season, with numerous last minute and OT wins this season, they found a way to win.
Buffalo and UB benefit from the national exposure that this game provided, we were mentioned numerous times on sportscenter and other ESPN programs, made the top of GoogleNews sports channel and the Today show this morning.
UB is building a program that has been growing in status and respect since it was reinstated in the early 80's. I hope that they can keep Turner Gill for another year or two, but I also know that the strength of this program goes beyond his influence as a coach. Ward Manuel and the rest of the Athletic Program should be very peoud of what all of the UB sporrts programs have accomplished in the years since going Division 1 and the nine years since taking the step to Division IA.
Great job to everyone involved, Buffalo has somethibg to talk proud about today.

Cinderella season??? WHAT? You are 7-5 before having last nights game gift wrapped and hand delivered to you! Ball State dominated that game and wouldn't have had half of those turnovers had they not been in desperation mode after a 14 point swing in the third quarter when the officials missed on a review call that my four year old made. So just remember that no one will remember you. Cinderella season, you have got to be kidding me?!?! Just remeber to mop up the floor at the officials Christmas dinner after the circle jerk.

Pretty sure just because your foot is inside the pylon doesn't make it a TD. Too bad the ball was out of bounds

Footballfan: Ball State blows. Must of been so frustrating watch your guys get taking to the house, especially since it was their own fault. I must say I got more than my share of laughs watching the gaffaws of the Ball State players. What a joke that team is: overrated!!!

I agree with Carl. Ball State was horrendous. Let's see who you beat this season. NO ONE. Wow, Indiana, who only one 3 games all season, barely beating Northwestern to get one Big Ten win.
12th ranked team in the country? I think not. And way to make excuses about us winning because of the 14 point swing that your team couldn't handle.
Maybe you guys should work on the snaps a bit more. And Blaming the ref's, that one doesn't get old. Sure, I thought he was in, but the ref's don't
a) teach your quarterback how to hold on to the ball, twice b) teach your center how to snap the ball, and for your qb how to take a snap.
Good try though.

Is what I'm reading serious??? UB had an amazing win. You call this website Buffalo rising and this is probably the most uplifting to happen in Buffalo in a long time and you people are scoffing at it??? UB went from worst to first in 3 years. UB. And you friggen people are saying they didn't deserve it or really aren't that good. They played with top teams in the country all year and should have beaten Pitt in pitt. Sure they didn't but playing these teams made them better. In regard to conference play they were a couple plays away from being at least 7 and 1. This is a huge win for UB, Buffalo, and this region. Some of the best national exposure I have ever seen on prime time tv was last night. Footballfan....why do you call yourself that? If you were a fan of football you would love everything about this. You are an embarrassment to the people of Buffalo. Ball St is horrendous??? They were 12 and 0!! God I actually feel bad for you. The best thing to happen in to this area in college sports since St. Bonaventure nearly knocked off UK in the NCAA tournament and you're belitttling this feat. They won, they won huge, and they did it against a great team. If you were really a football you would understand that don't just walk into a 12 and 0 record, you earn it. Just like UB earned the biggest college football victory of the last 2 or 3 generations. Thanks UB for a great season, and thank you Turner Gill for your work ethic and passion.

bufffan08 - the only person minimizing UB's accomplishment is the one-time commenter 'longtimefootballfan' who is clearly a pissed-off Ball State backer.

Absolutely the best college football game i've watched in 10 years.....granted i was drunk but still it was such an uplifting moment to see a Buffalo Sports team accomplish something so unexpected. I have to admit that I started to get that sick feeling in my stomach as the fourth quarter started and I realized that the lead was not quite big enough to allow me to sit back and enjoy my beer.....but after that fourth down strip and recovery, I knew it was done.
Turner Gill is inspirational to his players and should be to this city. His tears at the end of the game give me hope that he will stick around one more year to prove that he can turn a nothing team into a contender.
As for BuffFano8 - the story and every single comment on this thread minus the one from a Ball State fan was positive....so what the hell are you talking about?
Longt1mefootballfan - suck it.....let us enjoy a victory in this town for once. Just cause your cinderella turned into an ugly hag last night doesn't diminish what our football team accomplished.....and had your boy just stuck the ball over the goal-line instead of his foot, you would have had yourself a touchdown.

This was a big win for all involved. The two commercials produced by UB were very well done (showing examples of UB's impact on the world, from earth quake research to AIDs research). The announcers made numerous positives comments about the academic side of things, as well as a lengthy interview of the Notre Dame baskeball coach, who has a son on the Bulls.
As for the game, a few early calls went against the Bulls...specifically the personal foul on the safety, that led to Ball State tying the game at seven. The Bulls made plays when they had to, and by no means looked as if they should be two touchdown underdogs. Finally...Turner Gill is a class act. With almost 200 hundred Div. I schools, there are less than five african american coaches, Gill being the longest tenured.

First of all, shows how much you know about football Pico, and the rest of you fools from Buffalo(to bad the ball was out of bounds) lol... Second, CarlMalone, you will see Ball State blowing right past the MAC again next season, just have to watch. Overrated they are not . Who the hell did Buffalo beat? Oh I almost forgot about that Cinderella season at 7-5. Seven teams. You really ought to be proud. Talk about laughs. You guys suck it and will again next year, just hope you don't suck it good enough to get an undeserved ring again!!!! Just remember that no one will remeber you... except you and the officials.... song long as you mop up the mess after the circle jerk!!! Also remember to watch the Cardinals next season in the MAC championship game!!

footballfan - Buffalo fans have been on the short end of missed calls in big games, so right or wrong, that was the call, just live with it. Your team still had two chances after the call but a UB defender knocked your QB and the ball into next week and that is what changed the game, not the call. Ball State outplayed UB, really? I think you better look at the stats again. UB was a first down machine and moved the ball and dominated the line of scrimage when they had to. They were up against one of the best offenses in the nation so they knew they had to make big plays when the chances came. Drew Willy was composed and acurate, the defense hit hard and broke up passes and the running game was sound. 7-5 or 12-0 doesn't matter..UB is MAC Champs now because they should up and outplayed thier biggest and best opponent when it mattered most.
You are one angy and bitter person by the way, next year...really, what are you 12 years old, UB just beat the piss out of your best team in school history and ended your one chance at a perfect season, its over the damage is done, your finished. Our coach will be on to a bigger and more intense football school and we will go back to building a program that is only a few years old, and thats cool with me because we have a MAC title and that was a big step in the right direction.
And you are right Ball St is not overrated, the fewest turnovers and least penalized team in the nation with a fine QB that might be very good in the NFL one day, which makes your case even more silly, because when you ask, who did UB beat, we can say #12 Ball State thats who.

Longtimefootballfan - You sound really bitter about the loss, but let's keep things in perspective. The Buffalo 2008 season is very similar to the Ball State 2007 season, both finished with a record of 7-5 and accepted a bid to the International Bowl. Both had losing seasons the previous years, and were viewed as underdogs in the championship and bowl games. So don't get too cocky with your who will remember you bullshit. Remember that UB beat many of the same schools that Ball State beat this season.
I wish Ball State the best against Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl, hopefully they can use the loss to the Bulls as a motivator to run all over Tulsa. I also hope that UB can bring their best to beat UCONN in the 2009 International Bowl, this will be an incredibly tough game for UB and for UCONN.
UB did have a Cinderella Season, as defined as "One that unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect."... I think that this is equally applicable to the 2007 Cardinals team as well.
Good luck against Tulsa, now let Buffalo get back to the celebration. It is a good thing for the Ball State team that Nate Davis has changed his mind on entering the draft, after this past performance it is obvious that he still has a lot of room to improve, especially in terms of composure and leadership, not to mention the four fumbles that contributed to the loss.
Sorry about the loss man, I hope you can show some class and graciousness in defeat. Peace.

To whynot, my apologies bro...REALLY!! I'm getting over it now that a few days has passed. No doubt though I've been bitter, truly feel that the way things went down in that game.... it was taken from us. And you know like I know Ball State is the only bright spot in Indiana College Football at this present time. Also annoyed me to see Buffalo's arrogance there towards the end of the game, but anymore thats football wherever you are. It's all about rubbing it in the other teams face. You know every time a receiver catches a touchdown they have to mean mug the defender as if "did you see that" of course they saw it, they were guarding you. I'm somewhat ashamed of myself for coming onto this website and talking shit, just had to voice my opinion somewhere. My bad. Like I said before man, I'm sorry and congratulations on the big win. Oh one other thing, I WILL REMEMBER YOU. CYA

Also whynot good luck in the bowl game and future. To vgs, You guys beat the shit outta no one. Please don't get me started again. I think YOU need to see the stats so here they are
Ball State Buffalo First Downs 30 18 Total Yards 503 301 Pass Yards 351 206 Rush Yards 152 95 T.O.P. 34:18 25:42 my age not 12 32
Turnovers killed us and whynot is exactly right. The refs may have done what they did to us but Nate Davis and the Cardinals should have been able to overcome that and instead they folded.

football fan - 42-24, as a long time football fan I'm sure you realize that this is the only stat that matters. And kudos to to Ball St, they have have one of the best offensive units in the college football and they were expected to pile up yards, but you have to convert those yards to points...not turnovers, as you mentioned.
Good luck, I'm a MAC supporter either way
