Ukrainian Club delivers promise of cabbage rolls

Once upon a time, the only place to get a good cabbage roll was at a peasant's home in an Eastern European village. Around since the 1930's, the Ukrainian-American Civic Center, one of the oldest operating ethnic clubs in the area, has served the social welfare needs of immigrant families. My family was one of them.
Many dances, weddings and holiday events have been held in the hall. I have a glorious picture of my grandmother decked out in an eerie Santa-like formal gown.
Up until very recently, Ukrainian children and youth have been paraded onto the stage to recite traditional poems and dances at various holidays (whether they wanted to or not). I speak from embarrassing personal experience. I remember one particular case that involved a bout of nerve inspired tunnel vision.
If you find it strange that I would be involved in the promotion of a place that held so much dread for me as a child - you're not the only one. The thing is, this place is fun. It's chill and comfortable like a 70's basement bar. Membership is $10 a year and the club is open every Thursday and Friday night (kitchen open Fridays only). No DNA tests for Ukrainian-ness required.
Join me this Friday evening as I purge my demons through dance courtesy of DJ Mr. Bad Brakes. Further catharsis available via hot steaming cabbage rolls and pierogies made by Pani Hanypsiak and her kitchen helpers. The kitchen opens at 6pm and closes around 10 pm, with music and bar festivities going on well past midnight.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.

Not many Ukrainians here in Vegas - but there was a thriving community in Honolulu, would you believe it!
Say HI to my home parish - St. John The Baptist on Elmlwood in Kenmore for me...the Perioghi Ladies make them for sale every week usually. Altho my aunt says they're getting older and fewer...best to call up and reserve some by phone I hear...I just got some by mail a few months ago - have a few left in the freezer...
I know how to make the Holubitsi (cabbage rolls) - both the meat and meatless (rice only) variety...but haven't in YEARS...
now if I could only get the courage to make my gramma's cheeze cakes and walnut cookies...but I get discouraged when I look at the recipie card, and flip it over and read "day two" in the instructions...
