Update: Rusty Chain Beer And Bike Rings

Story Options

After long last (actually not that long) I'm happy to announce that Rusty Chain beer is ready and the first series of bike rings will be installed on Allen Street tomorrow morning (see back story). Of course we're a bit biased, but the Rusty Chain team is very pleased regarding the outcome of the beer. It's super smooth and clean, no strong aftertaste with decent hop character. The beer is so good that the first few kegs have already been kicked at the Flying Bison brewery. Beer fans and cyclists have been filling up their growlers (at FB) as the bars and restaurants have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first commercial shipments. Those shipments should be arriving at an establishment near you any day now. I just leaned that The Village Beer Merchant has Rusty Chain, Buffalo's Bike-Friendly Brew, on tap.

The Blue Bike bike rings (seen here being prepared at Atlas Steel by EB Iron Art) will be the first to make it onto the street. We're meeting up at Cafe 59 to install this series. Then, once Allen Street has been tackled, we'll be heading on to Elmwood before eventually hitting Hertel. Both Elmwood and Hertel will see different style rings than Allentown. Just hope that more parking meter poles are not removed before we get to them. Unfortunately, Chippewa business owners opted to have their poles removed and will not be getting any bike locking rings. We even have safety caps to place at the tops of the meter poles. Thanks to a well-attended fundraiser, supporting bars and restaurants, Atlas Steel, Flying Bison and the Rusty Chain crew for making this bike/beer-friendly project possible.

*The new bike rings will be fitted with a carriage bolt safety feature before being cut and stripped to prevent tampering

What a great example of local collaboration to privately (with the public jumping on the bandwagon) to make improvements to our city. Great project guys! I can't wait to take part in making buffalo a bike friendlier city with a pint or two of Rusty Chain.

Just curious but where is the social equity of a bicycle ring program in the EVA and Hertel? If promoting the bicycle as transportation is in fact a goal, and not just a hip thing for certain neighborhoods, why not the Bailey Ave corridor or South Park?

Cause white people like riding bikes. It's #61 on the list (credit to pundit).

That's a good question. This past summer we asked The City to stop removing the parking meter poles that were scheduled to be pulled. Those meters were on Allen Street, Elmwood and Hertel. We covered that story a few months ago. So we're just following the removal of the meter heads. It's not a socio-economic strategy... we're keeping our eyes out for the installation routes of the new parking machines. If you see parking meter poles with their heads removed that are in need of a bike ring (not on Elmwood, Hertel or Allen), let us know.

It looks like Colin has had a few Rusty Chains already. Club 107 is doing its part to put bike rings on all streets in Buffalo.

Oh man it is there already?!

I don't know but perhaps the focus on the streets is based on the feedback from the community and businesses. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If Bailey or South Park want bike rings they need to get the ear of their respective councilmen and businesses and push for it. Nothing happens for you.

Tasty, Rusty Chain is my new favorite brew for now.
