Upping the ante on Rhode Island

There's nothing like following a project that moves forward one moment, then slows up the next, before finally moving in a different direction. That's what's been happening with Scott Washburn and John Crawford's 476 Rhode Island Street property - remember the brick building that we featured in this post? After the story was written, some of the key financial components began to change and it looked as if the purchase was not going to take place. It was heartbreaking to watch, but eventually the two decided to take the plunge and purchase the property. At the same time, they also decided to snag the adjacent lot, as well as another vacant house a couple of doors down.
The intention is now to fix up the abandoned house so that they have a place to live near their larger investment. Once the brick structure is habitable, the two are planning on vacating the fixed-up house, which will then become a secondary source of income for the two. I recently heard that if John and Scott had not purchased the two-storey house, there were others waiting in the wings who wanted to tear it down for use as a parking lot. Thanks to Scott and John, Rhode Island will not be adding another parking lot to its roster, rather it will have at least two additional functioning properties that will help to increase the area's unique charm. They also have plans to utilize the corner lot in ways that will benefit the neighborhood rather than detract from it.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

Their house on Breckenridge was amazingly renovated. I'm sure these next projects will turn out the same way.

I wish them luck. I love buffalo more than anyone but the area around Massachusetts Ave is a mess. I volunteer at the Boys and Girls club over there. So many great buildings are in rough shape and many houses are just falling apart. Its sad. But this is great news tho. Lets keep pushing westward!

I agree Sal--their house on Breckenridge was amazing. They are the ones from the Garden Walk with the awesome Asian garden that led out to a cool alleyway. I'm sure these two properties will be just as commendable as their home on Breck. I can't wait to see the finished results.

Again, I hate to be cynical, but I will believe all of this when they take action and move forward with construction. Do they have a timeline for all construction so we can see the progress as it unfolds?

Oh I wish them the best of everything here.! It's a great idea for anyone who can afford it to buy adjacent properties and fix them up as well. It should be a terrific investment and a great example a what just a few people can do. And while the West Side is getting the treatment, it's time to look east as well...
