Urban Dig in Broadway-Fillmore District

Our friends at Broadway Fillmore Alive shared this great video with us after last Sunday's "urban dig" in Polonia. If you watch, you'll see and hear Boy Scout Leader Peter Jablonski explain why he brought his troop to his old neighborhood in search of relics at the site of an old "gin mill".
According to BFA co-founder Christopher Byrd, "Both Peter and his father have written books on history, and his father was a major historian of the East Side." Byrd also said he wished he'd had an opportunity to meet the elder Jablonski before he passed away a few years ago because he knew so much about the area BFA is working to preserve and rebuild.
Of the dig, Byrd said, "[Peter] did one a few years ago, and it's a great alternate use for a vacant property. With a coordinated effort, you can uncover so much history when a house is demolished."
Aside from that, Byrd likes that the digs "introduce kids to the neighborhood, so that they understand it was once part of a thriving metropolis, humming with activity."
Apparently the dig has sparked the interest of Michael Miller, BFA co-founder and current president of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation. Byrd said, "Mike thought it might be cool if we did a dig around the terminal 'cause they bulldozed hundreds of houses to build it. Can you imagine what we'd find there?"

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
