Volunteers Ready to Brush Up Buffalo

Brush Up Buffalo is a non-for-profit group of volunteers dedicated to sprucing up low-income housing in diverse sections of Buffalo. This year the group hopes to paint at least 10 homes on the West Side along Plymouth Avenue and Hudson Street (see "before" photos above).
To accomplish their goal will take nearly 1,000 volunteers, a figure they are moving steadily toward. The community is rallying around Brush Up Buffalo in every way; they recently received $12,500 more in sponsorships. Their generous donors include the Wendt Foundation ($5,000), the Bank of America ($2,500), Capital Management Services ($2,500), M&T Bank ($1,500), Malcolm Pirnie ($500), and UPS ($500).
Every year since its founding in 1996, Brush Up Buffalo organizes a day of volunteer work when members of the community are able to help “brush up” neighborhoods that need a little TLC. So far, the volunteers have painted 208 homes in 10 different neighborhoods.
It's never too late for you to come out and make a difference in our community! The annual day of volunteer work is June 16, beginning at 7 a.m. If you want to get involved, you can either register online or call (716) 250-3353. Or, if the sunny Saturday approaches and you find yourself restless, you can join the crew that morning.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

For everyone on this site, I just want to say that I volunteered for Brush Up Buffalo one year before I moved to LA and it was one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences I've had in my life. We painted the home of a senior woman whose house hadn't been touched at all since her husband died. About 50-75 of us swarmed her house all day long, and when it was done, she came out of the house, offered us some of her homemade iced tea and cried in joy. She said "Henry would be so proud." It can't get much better than that!
Go out and volunteer! =)

I agree with spotswoc, I volunteered for this event when they painted homes in the Fruitbelt, Definitely one of the most fun experiences I have had volunteering, Only second to planting trees which you can watch grow for your whole life. If you are bored and want to do something out in your community, on a nice summer day you should really consider this an option.
