Boat Fans And Hockey Fans Mix It Up At The Slip

Yesterday, visitors to the Commercial Slip were greeted with a number of spectacular sights and sounds. Like the drumming of a dragon boat as intense rowers powered it out in front of the canal. And the Maritime Center was on hand as well - there were a few of the center's inspiring beauties docked along the walls of the Commercial Slip. I must say that seeing these boats 'in action' was a real treat. The last time I had seen them, they we still being prepared for water excursions. Some day these same boats might be acting as water taxis, just as they did 100 years ago. If only there had been a place to grab something to eat and drink (at the slip)... that would have been the icing on the cake. To see the Naval Museum across the way was a bit torturous - why wasn't there even a coffee shop in there? Oh well, walking around and seeing all of the activity was refreshing.
Speaking of activity, there were hundreds of Sabres' fans walking around exploring the Inner Harbor, because it was the first Open Skate for the team, and the HSBC Arena was hosting a street hockey tournament to celebrate the start of the hockey season.
Even Buffalo Sabres owner Tom Golisano was on hand giving an interview - I'm not sure if many of the Sabres' fans knew exactly what was going on. I wonder if any hockey fans arrived to the Open Skate via boat? Now that would be something!

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

The Commercial slip is finally starting to bring together the foot of Main area as it was imagined, or at least as I imagined it, when Crossroads Arena / MMA / HSBC Arena was built. This area is going to be GREAT in October and May/June when the Sabres are starting the season and ending it in the playoffs. Maybe if the Bisons can put things together again it can buzz in the summer with Bisons traffic too.

I would like to see someplace open up to grab some coffee. Maybe a patio facing the water.

I would love to see a taxi or ferry between Buffalo and one of the ports in Canada. This would be a fun excursion that would be reminiscent of my mom's trips from Buffalo to Crystal Beach.

About public passenger boats back and forth between the US and Canada...
Nothing today concerning border crossings, especially internationally, is as it was in my mother's day. And most especially since 9/11/1.
Heck, my mom used to sneak fireworks on the Canadiana back to Buffalo mixed in with all of our wet beach stuff.
Imagine what could and would be snuck back and forth today!
Having said that, we wish The Hatch would stay open all year round.

"Just as they did 100 years ago . . ." This, in a nutshell, defines Buffalo's problem.
