WBFO and BRO: Elmwood Market, World Record and Skate Park

In another installment of Buffalo Rising Roundtable, Newell and I visited Mark Scott in the WBFO studios. This week we talked about New World Record going out, the Elmwood Market coming in and the proposed skate park initiated by Jay "Micropark" McCarthy.

New World Record had so many fun things other than music, but the sustainability factor didn't seem to be there once the move was made from Elmwood near Cleveland to the corner of Delaware and Hertel. Whether it was the loss of foot-traffic in conjunction with impulse buys, or a trend in music sales overall, it's sad to see New World go out.

As for the incoming Elmwood Market: Welcome! With the loss of X-Celand Latina's as well, there is a need for a vendor on this corner, offering good fresh food options.

Even more exciting, you'll find a link in Newell's Elmwood Market post that will allow you to have a say in the stocking of the shelves. Is there some item that you have trouble finding, or something that you buy with some frequency that you don't want to have to go all the way to a big grocery store to get? The new owners aim to please.

As for the proposed skate park, I think it fits in nicely with the whole idea of bring amenities into the area ahead of Bass Pro. Families are going to want to visit, and the skateboarders ought to have a place to hang while the rest of the family does their thing. Skaters need an outdoor venue that's close to other attractions; this is it.

We had last weeks controversy surrounding the West Side Market on our agenda, and ran out of time just before we got to it. Remember, if there's something you'd like to hear the three of us discuss, send Newell or me a note before Friday morning of any week, and we'll do our best to put it on the roster. After all, it's all about the conversation.

A few points I want to make, and please know that I mean them to be constructive, not obnoxious.

    1. Elena: you keep the mic too far from you most of the time, and you're hard to hear. The one exception was when you leaned in and said, "yay Jay". Also, you have a tendency to interrupt and talk over Newell and Mark, which is districating.

    2. Newell, you should make a concerted effort to not say, "you know" and "like" quite so often. These are verbal crutches and merely serve to trivialize your point. Also, Elena, when interjecting, avoid the phrase, "can I just say one thing about...". That phrase is courteous, but wastes precious airtime.

    3. New World Records moved off of Elmwood for a _reason_, no? That reason must have been that they weren't selling enough merchandise to enable them to keep that space on Elmwood. The move to Hertel and Delaware did not, succeed, regrettably. However, there are so many other issues at play when it comes to the sustainability of an independent record store in an age where you can get everything online in an a la carte manner. This has nothing to do with the "walkability" or lack thereof in the store's immediate vicinity, or with the store's status as an "institution".

    4. I can't help but to think that the market being proposed at Elmwood and North is the right thing in the wrong location.

Or the market will help right a wrong?

Why are people saying the new elmwood market is in the wrong location? This makes no sense. Its in a great vibrant part of Allentown. Sorry its not as trendy as the upper elmwood village for you. If clean well run business's move into the area then good people will go. If crappy low end business's that don't care about the community move in you get the opposite. I think the market will only in-hanse that section of elmwood, possibly becoming a catalyst for more business to move in.

Ah, the old argument of business first, people will follow. Whereas others say the people need to come and the businesses will show up. I fall into the latter category as hundreds of failed businesses around Buffalo will testify to the likelihood that the former is never true. Good luck Elmwood Market, you're gonna need it.

    Buffalopundit,

Despite your disclaimer, your comments are more obnoxious than constructive. It's always easier to be critical than creative, finding fault with others from the comfort of your desk chair.

Elena is not responsible for maintaining her own mic level; it's up to the engineer in the studio.

They're having a three-way unscripted conversation, and it's inevitable that someone will talk over another while joining in or making a point. To criticize this is nitpicking, no matter how "districating" you find it.

When lecturing someone on speaking properly, you should make a concerted effort not to split infinitives. It merely serves to trivialize your point.

You're criticizing Elena for being courteous? For wasting precious airtime? 3 or 4 seconds? Thanks for the chuckle.

The Buffalo Rising/WBFO roundtable discussions are just that: conversations among 3 or 4 people with knowledge and opinions about current events. They're not perfect; none of us is, as your comments demonstrate so well.

Laird3rd - you must have been doing drugs at The Pink tonight. This grocery market does not stand a chance of making it in this neighborhood.

The fact is that there are deranged section 8 vagrants all over this part of Elmwood; unless the market sells crack, Jim's steak out, or 40's - it aint happening my man.

Laird3rd was out for chickken and porn!! gaustad - there is a big need for peach flavor DutchMasters as well as chore boy in this neghborhood... Why must it be bad - what we need is more crackheads, not less, to support this store.

Yeah, I had some typos in there because the "recent comments" was immediately to the left of the box in which I write my comment, and a long link blew over half of that box. My bad for misspelling words.

I know Elena has no control over her mic level, but she does have control over the distance between her mic and her mouth, no?

But if your idea of good radio is listening to grown people use Valley Girl crutches and interrupt each other, then I'm glad you've found a show for you. Funny, but I don't hear that sort of thing on even the unscripted radio shows I listen to.

Well at least there were no "suckhole" paroxysms in her commentary, El Pundito Buffaloito. Why not pick on someone your own size? I mean Joe Franklin is still out there somewhere, isn't he?

For every jerk who comments about how the elmwood village sucks or how your radio show sucks or how your website sucks, there are three times as many people who enjoy living in elmwood, listening to your radio show, and appreciate the work you do advocating the great aspects of our city but at the end of the day, we just probably don't comment enough. Keep it up.

    Stephen:

Thanks. That makes us feel good. And I think the radio vs. podcast distinction has to be made. The 20-minute podcast is the outtake while the 5-minute segment Mark airs is edited. WBFO is a great community service, due largely to Mark Scott's professionalism. All Newell and I know is we have fun every time we go there.

I kind of also agree that this location isn't the best spot for this type of market. It seems a little "fancy" for the majority of people that walk this section of Elmwood. What's up with the Stuvysent Plaza? Too bad that whole building/parking lot couldn't be demolished and made into a park........maybe skate/dog park? maybe a minature Tift Farms?? nah

I just spoke to JP at Sunday. He has the new video, and says he doesn't want to sound totally egotistical, but it's the best video ever. You can take that to the bank. They're at Sunday for $15, and I'm going to get mine on the way home today. Preview at: http://www.sundayskatebmx.com/main.html# and you can also order it there if you don't have time to make it to the store.

JP said, "It's total artistry. We used a new camera that's one step below HD, and the color is beautiful. It makes Buffalo look so lush." Beyond that, there's some news about some major companies this little video got the attention of, and one dream-come-true story. More on that later.

Did I tell you I love these guys?
