Welcome to the Elmwood Village
It's amazing what a new paint job and a sign touch-up can do for a corner. Take the Subway house at the corner of Elmwood and Forest for example. For years I have been driving by that eye-sore wondering if and when the owner was ever going to repaint that awful 'pealing sky blue' color that welcomes people to the Elmwood Village. Adding insult to injury was the brutal wrap-around yellow Subway awning, which signaled 'extra-cheese'... the awning is still there, but the clashing electric yellow and pealing sky blue colors have 'left the building'.
This may seam like a minor cosmetic change and highly unlikely to end up as a post on BRO, but I nearly drove off the road the other day when I spotted the transformation. Yes, I know that the sign is still there and Subway will probably never pick up the litter and debris that constantly accumulates at that corner (along with the flyer ridden light standard). Oh, I wish I had the photo archive of Steel to show a before and after, forgive me. For anyone that has spent time driving by this village gateway, all that I can say is, "Wow, what a difference, welcome to the Elmwood Village!"

I agree the new paint is wonderful, but can I still think it's ugly? I guess I do not care for the color and ugly yellow Subway banner. Still new paint is good and it's an imporvment so yea!

They must have replaced the windows with white vinyl, thus the odd look of white frames on the newly painted body. Maybe someone can inform the owner that there IS paint for vinyl. I see they still have the Blue Night neon box, above their sign.... wonder if it still works.
I find the new colors quite pleasant! A neighbor's house was the same faded blue/gray mess as this place was, until last year; now it's deep red with yellow-ish trim - no more haunted house look !

Hopefully it won't be long before people are welcomed to Elmwood Village by a Wyndham hotel with first floor retail..perhaps then someone will lease the empty space next to Subway and we'll have a more fitting entry to the neighborhood, rather than 4 dilapidated eyesores on one side, and a Subway and empty storefront on the right -- I think the foot of the H.H. Richarson complex deserves a bit more.

DoktorK... brilliant! I remember when that whole stretch of Elmwood was lit up by those neon blue strips of light. I wonder what percentage are burned out now?

Im not sure how much of an improvement it really is for Elmwood.
This building doesnt have stucco but it still evokes a tudor stucco&frame building even if the part where it is stucco is filled in with shingle/siding. Everyone knows the traditional tudor colors which are very conservative: black&white, dark brown&creme. The dark brown and creme would have actually looked ok with the yellow subway sign.
I dont understand the owners of Buffalo property. So many owners not only dont maintain their home but they put no effort into landscaping or colors. In Buffalo its the standard reply...hey bud...your lucky I spent the money on my property at all.
Im usually one to try to defend our city with hopes and good wishes but how bout giving our city some class! Pick the right colors, paint thoe windows brown and plant a couple trees and put a couple pots outside. Really, Subway has a good location and makes a nice sum of money...do something for the community you cheap b*d's!

Brown and "creme" (is that the New Math word for cream?) would have been boring. Caramel & cappucino are pleasing to the eye and more food-like. L, there is a tree just out of frame to the left, in front of the pizza place (same owner) - but that's the City's responsibility. There's also a pot of flowers in the picture; can't you see it? Trees along the side would be impractical - the sidewalk isn't wide enough.

The entire grey-blue-black housepaint palette ought to be illegal in this climate! I know they're appropriate on Colonial Revivals, but other colors are, too. :)
Authentic Tudor colors or not, this is a big improvement at Subway.
Oh, and Queeneyes, I think you mean peeling instead of pealing, which refers bells ringing, not paint flaking. :)

I kinda like the cheesy bubble awnings...for some weird reason.
A vibrant urban streetscape tends to have a wild, funky clash of colors and fonts. I am aware that Forever Elmwood dictates uniform signage arrangements consisting of gooselamps and cast-iron medevial village signs. That does look nice on certain types of shops...but if the whole street looks like same then Elmwood comes out looking more lke some sort of sanitized resort town than a booming neighborhood retail strip.
I'll also mention the tacky awnings do a great job at getting passerby's attention. I know what the store/establishment is within a few seconds of looking at it. For shops that sport those "cute" hanging signs FE favors, i've found myself walking by repeated times not even noticed what the place is. Driving by in a car (which in reality, accounts for most of the people passing down Elmwood), there is no hope of noticing those businesses.

Maybe I am giving away my age (LOL) but Elmwood was filled with trees at one point and many houses were graced by IVY.
NO! I dont see no stinkin pots of flowers pot of flowers in the picture.
And no one whether its residential or retail likes to be assaulted by signs or colors or garbage. Its up to the businesses to get their businesses noticed and many many businesses on Elmwood have absolutely wonderful eye catching store fronts so you know immediately whether its antiques, clothes, food, etc and doubled the size of their display window for the purpose.
Instead of being assaulted by signs and colors why not change Elmwood to a cobblestone or brick road which would reduce traffic to 30mph easily making it more friendly to pedestrians, bikes, kids, residents who hate the speeding down Elmwood and the sidestreets, etc and it slowing down the speed will encourage more parking and walk activity. Businesses and property values would surge from cobblestone streets, trees and IVY covered businesses (my opinion). It would immediately give Elmwood back its class and distinction.

Cast iron signs? I guess they've had zero impact on my eye, because I had no idea there were such things on Elmwood, until you mentioned it ! Must look for them, next time. If "unobtrusive" was the objective, methinks it be a success. heh.
ps - I'm lucky to hit 20mph, if I drive on Elmwood during the day. The street seems to have hit its automobile saturation point. That's a different subject, though .

DoctorK, No we have people who are saying that cars speed up and down Elmwood and need to be assaulted by a moonscape of intrusive colors and signs when your right the windows on Elmwood are big and their displays attractive while traffic moves at a speed which allows everyone to see what business is what and where.
We most definitely need to abolish what rubbish it is that we cannot have trees and landscaping, tasteful colors and tasteful signage.

Simply amazing that anything so silly could generate such comment.
The glaring white windows are the problem with this nice old building. Any combination of colors would be fine if the windows didn't look like a bad set of dentures.

Dentures. hehe.
About the flyer-ridden poles: I've considered taking trash bags & scraper in hand, and cleaning some of those, but I'm afraid of being assaulted by irate scotchtape-wielding flyerhangers. :)

I also think "THE Elmwood Village" is a ridiculous moniker. Precious and patently anti-urban, insular and unconnected. Speaks of "The Right People,"

docktor-k...get your scraper out!
...on my morning walk to Tazo each day for my latte, I carry a florist knife in my pocket and hit every pole between N. pearl and Elmwood. Those flyers are visual noise and the city counsel should have a fine against them...in fact anyone who cares about their neighborhood should be taking them down whenever going for a walk, only takes a second.

oh yeah, and another thing...those plastic awnings are awful, so suburbin strip mall. Get nice fabric ones...hope the Statler does.
