We're Getting Our Beach
Here’s some good news for Buffalo’s Waterfront. At a press conference earlier today The Mayor and city officials announced the formation of an Erie Basin Committee. The committee was created in answer to many questions revolving around what measures would be taken to make the land surrounding the water more people-friendly. And guess what? We’re getting our Tower Shorline Beach (see story here). I spoke to Committee Member Tim Tielman who was thrilled that The Mayor was looking out on behalf of the people. “We’ve been having discussions,” Tim told me. “And I got a notification yesterday that there was going to be a meeting and a press conference today. We selected a number of things that we could open by May 24th and the Tower Shoreline Beach came in first. We’re going to take the driftwood and deliver it to the dog parks and other areas that could use it. The committee will be looking at all of the Erie Basin Marina as a neighborhood… from LaSalle Park to the Canal District. We’re going to focus on how to connect these areas with downtown. We’re talking about water taxis, widening sidewalks, beaches, and we want to cut down on the roadways while creating walkways and bikeways. On May 24th we’re opening the beach for everything but swimming.”
I hope that a couple of volley ball nets are added to the budget… and some grills, and a shelter or two in case it rains, and some sightseeing viewfinders, and some bike racks, and some fire pits… looks like Erie Basin Marina is going to be the place to be this summer.
