West Village Giant Flea Market

West Village Giant Flea Market

Story Options

For those of you who have expressed a desire to see a Flea Market downtown (even for a day), there is a Sunday this summer that will see the West Village transformed into "Pennies In The Park Flea Market". Johnson Park is the perfect layout for this type of event because there is plenty of shade from the old trees, and the green island acts as a sort of roundabout that keeps the people traffic flowing.

The organizers are still filling booths, which means that there is time to jump onboard to unload some of your long-forgotten desirables. The market will be featuring power tools, electronics, garden "stuff", furniture, sports equipment, antiques and collectibles, and household items. Kids' spaces are free for the young entrepreneurs... hey, even kids could use some extra spending cash (and it'll make them clean up their rooms). Most importantly, come down and support the market, because the proceeds go towards programs and projects in the Historic West Village District.

The market is scheduled to take place Sunday, June 10th on the Johnson Park Green (off S. Elmwood next to Hutch Tech). For booth information ($10 per 10'x10' area) call Anne @ 716-697-1287.

June 10? That's the same weekend as the AllenTown (fine) Art Festival. Cool, one other thing to do besides people watching. Should be a great time. I'll probably find more there to buy than at the festival.

Amazing what people can do with absolutely no funding from government - way to go West Villagers!

Great Idea - I'll personally work security against the Allentown VILLAGE SOCIETY commanders if they hassle you.

Sal, you are too funny. But, no worries there. The Common Council provided the WVRG with a resolution allowing us to hold the Flea Market. They are aware that we repair the park, maintain the park, plant gardens, and have other efforts we promote and carry out in the WV, so they fully endorsed the sale on that day, which also supercedes any other requirements.

The WVRG spends approximately $3,500 annually (and that's a minimum) out of pocket. (The Board Members personal pockets) We recieve no income from government, and, since we also have our own jobs, haven't had the time to write for any local grants (and that's funny, since I make my living writing grants. My personal costs within the organization amount to approximately $2,800 annually without taking into consideration the hours spent each week by various Board Members. So, it's time to make some money to add to various beautification efforts, pay for paper and other office supplies, buy food for volunteers when they assist with neighborhood clean up efforts, and other needs any organization has. Someday, we'll have time to write a grant.

However, Bank of America is sponsoring the Children's Clotheline Art Show!

MRodgers - thanks. I plan to be there on Sunday. I've even moved my Allentown ASSOCIATION volunteer time to do so. The volunteer aspect of WVRG really gets my attention and respect.

I think you are charging too little for the spaces. Can someone make a contribution (silly question but I want to stimulate more interest)?

hennesey, with you, Sal, and Leon on our side this should be a great day! Of course, contributions are always accepted! :-) And, we just found out a vandor will be dispensing both antiques as well as hot dogs, pop, and Italian sausage! Great stop on your way to or from the Allentown Festival!
