Got A Tip? You Make the Call.

If you've got a neighbor who is causing trouble in your neighborhood, this may be a good time to call The City. 78 new police recruits have just joined the force, a Mobile Response Unit has been stationed on Chippewa during peak times (part of the Chippewa Entertainment District Public Safety Plan), and public camera monitors continue to be installed as part of a zero tolerance law enforcement policy. Mayor Brown and Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson claim that this Zero Tolerance policy is not a one-time deal, and are assuring the public that although crime is down in general, these stepped-up enforcement efforts are here to stay.
One recent arrest resulted from a citizen complaint, which is very encouraging. In the past getting a response like that was like pulling teeth. For years a typical response from headquarters came in the form of, "Do you have proof... do you have it on camera?" Like the neighbors are supposed to be detectives? That's why it should be an opportune time to make the call that may have gone unanswered in the past. The confidential tip line is 716-847-2255.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …

So are the cops just going to be guarding businesses on Chippewa or actually out in the neighborhoods where people live and the crimes are taking place?

So you mean when my apartment got broken into last March by the crack addict that lived below me, the problem was not enough cops? I think its actually not enough detectives to look into these issues and actually fix the problems, or so the dispatcher told me when I was told it would be a week at least until someone got in touch with me when I had the kid caught. He got evicted 2 weeks later. I hope you're enjoying my macbook!

Wow...
It is fantastic that they have hired more officers.
It is great that they are taking a more proactive approach to response.
But there are more than a few things still really screwed up...
Take last week's Buffalo News in describing the three different rackets of theives operating this past sumer. "These guys go all over, but once they do the burglary, they go to the same six-block area on the West Side of Buffalo to buy heroin,” said sheriff’s narcotics detective... (And please - lets not get bogged into the "they were robbing in the suburbs, the city's not that bad" ranting and raving - that's not the point.)
If it is the "same 6-block area on the West Side" - can't something be done about it? Do we have Bunny Colvin working down there?
This is only an example - one can point to the recent home invasion string in North Buffalo or even last week's attack just off of Nottingham. I am not just complaining because now its in my backyard, I am concerned that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Will new police recruits, a better customer service attitude and a camera on Chip do anything? What about the folks that have to live with the violence and crime for a lot longer than those of us in the north? How about the poster (who I am sure is coming), that is about to point out the inequity in policing as it pertains to the East Side and the rest of the city?
These actions, while welcomed, are a public relation bandage that will do nothing but save face until the next riot outside of Shea's. At least then, someone can say they did something....
So - great news - now I can call on my neighobr with the loud muffler and while I am at it, they will fill in the pothole that put the hole in the muffler. Maybe Byron can institute a 24 hour line for those annoyed at negative posters on Buffalo Rising...

Very happy to hear about the infusion of new police officers but I hope the tip line isn't staffed by the same audacious people who answer the 911 line. I actually had to ask the operator on the other line if I had called an emergency number or some pompous neighbor by accident. The tone of the voice is on the other line was mocking me. It seemed that he was under the assumption that I had somehow caused my own victimization or was somehow reveling in the drama of it. I had to justify my call over and over and finally I had to ask straight out whether or not he was going to send an officer out or not. It seems anyone willing to live on the East side must surely be a criminal, undeserved of justice.
(oh spell check... awesome!)

Every time I phone in about a strange man who's loitering around my posh digs in Oakland Place, I get the same sigh and indifferent tone. I know that these people know this guy called "EricOak" ,but why the attitude? I expect my tax dollars to be put to good use removing the riff raff from my carriage house stoop, not so some pitiful "public servant" can file her nails in her cubicle. I think the only solution is to open a Tim Hortons downstairs so I can get some response from the pigs.

Geez folks, unwind your mind and rethreaad your head! Hey! It may not be perfection yet, but we now have 78 recruits that we've been waiting for for a long time! Hello!?! It is a start. And forget reading the Buff News for crime stuff....pick up your local, neighborhood rag, and read the police blotter, you'll get a lot more info there...
It also helps to not tick off the already overworked 911 emergency call responders. I've never had a problem when I've called. And the response has been swift, when in my nieghborhood, or on the streets in any area of B'flo.
These kind of responses makes me wonder how those brave (and yes, they are) new recruits are feeling about joining the force with this kind of cynicism.

ever make a complaint at B district? you stand in the lobby and yell through a bullet proof window....when i inquired as to why there was no interview room for complaints, the response from BPD was..."we have safety issues".....so the police are afraid of citizens making complaints!......'78' is not gonna change the mindless culture and utter lack of ability of so many in the BPD to deal with the public professionally, intelligently, and with compassion.
as far as Chippewa, the bar owners should be paying for security.....or be charged for this increased police presence......put the cops where the crime is....like the west and east sides.......or would that make too much sense?

Great, more taxpaying dollars going towards people doing nothing! -Check out this photo I took recently. This cop was in parked in a handicapped spot at Starbucks for over an hour with the car running while I was in Spot Coffee. High Gas prices....taxpayers money.... I see this often around the city, especially in the handicapped spots on Pearl while the cops go into Tim Horton's for breakfast.
