Dolci & Gelato

The summer weather has put in a serious appearance, so it's time to get serious about keeping your cool.

Homemade gelato is one delicious way to stay cool. You may have heard about it and thought, Nah, I'll stick with my good old fashioned ice cream. But, once you've tried this Italian-inspired treat, you'll never turn back. That is, if you've had real, honest-to-goodness homemade gelato.

How can you tell when you've had the real thing? It's one of those times when you just know you've found it. Homemade gelato is more dense, has less air than ice cream and is creamy beyond words. It's more pudding-like than ice cream, but a bit healthier, because it's made with milk instead of cream.

And there's no better place to satisfy your taste buds than at Dolci in the heart of the Elmwood Village. If you can manage to make your way past the sparkling cases of out-of-this-world Italian cookies, pastries and specialty cakes, you'll be glad that you saved yourself for Dolci's…

"Leave the gun. Take the cannolis."

--The Godfather (1972)

This piece of advice from The Godfather is a good one, but one that most Italians would not need a reminder of. The humble cannoli is the go-to Italian dessert throughout Sicily and America.

A brief bit of history; "cannoli" is actually plural, "cannolo" being the singular form. That being said, I've never heard someone ask for a "cannolo" so you're probably not going to get laughed at if you order a dozen "cannolis." If the grammar works in The Godfather, it works for me. This word (however you wish to conjugate it) translates to "little tube." For those unfamiliar with cannoli, they are tube-like fried pastry shells filled with sweetened ricotta cheese.

Traditionally, that should be the entirety of the dessert: pastry and sweetened ricotta filling with perhaps a dusting of powdered sugar. However, there have been many…

Loaves of Love

Standing at the corner of Elmwood and Breckenridge, Dolci bakery springs from the curb, emitting tantalizing scents. Once inside the door, you encounter not only display cases filled with sumptuous treats, but also an air of calm, content happiness. Kevin and Melissa Gardner, along with partner David Simpson, have re-invented this little village bakery. The sweets are sweet, but so is the love that is poured into every cookie, pastry and cake. Brittany Kirkley, the woman that handles the front counter, always has a beaming smile for her customers, and loves her job so much that she has occasionally asked to come in and work on her days off (for free!)

The recent addition of artisan bread maker Josh Willett only increases the value of Dolci to its surrounding neighborhood. Josh has a passion (much like the rest of the staff) for the traditions and principles of authenticity …

Cookies with Heart!

Valentine's day is upon us! In a few weeks we will be celebrating the loved ones in our lives. These are the people who stand by our side everyday - the people we would do anything for no matter the sacrifice just to see them safe and happy.

So the question is: How do we show these people just how grateful we are? Well, tradition shows that a box of chocolates and some flowers are standard. So millions of us will go to a store and buy exactly that. Let's hope that the expression "It's the thought that counts" applies to this popular safety net. Because handing over a box of mass produced, mediocre chocolates, of which flavor is completely indistinguishable from one to the next is,AePwell there's a better way to treat our sweethearts!
